  • James Wesley Rawles has a series of prepper novels which are fast, practical, instructive reads, cramming survival skills within the context of a financial collapse.  A list of them in chronological order is available here:

They’re sprinkled with pro-Protestant perspective, which is irritating, but passes quickly, and he includes a couple traditional Catholics as well.

Another prepper novel worth reading from the same ilk is William Forstchen’s “One Second After,” about America without rule of law after an EMP explosion.  Summary here:

Just making mention of these books because of the practical survivalist and prepper strategies contained within them, which might be helpful to some.  Good to read with pen in hand, to underline helpful passages and make margin notes.

  • “How complacent we become when we sit secure, hedged round by laws and protections a government may provide! How soon we forget that but for these governments and laws there would be naught but savagery, brutality and starvation.

For our age-old enemies await us always, just beyond our thin walls.  Hunger, thirst, and cold lie waiting there, and forever among us are those who would loot, rape, and maim rather than behave as civilized men.

If we sit secure this hour, this day, it is because the thin walls of the law stand between us and evil.  A jolt of the earth, a revolution, an invasion or even a violent upset in our own government can reduce all to chaos, leaving civilized man naked and exposed.”
