  • The Bushnell Elite line has excellent value.

The low-end magnification of 6X makes using the rifle on targets within 100yds rather difficult.

Some solve that problem by using a "red dot" sight offset at 45°.  Others solve that problem with a 2.5-10X.  Other solve the problem by delegating CQB shots to a spotter. Still others judge that 25 or 50 yard shots are so unlikely that they make no special provision for such near shots.

An example of an offset dot sight using a Spuhr mount:

The Spuhr mounts are top tier. Besides their precision and diverse accessories, I like that they incorporate a bubble level visible while in shooting position, hugely important in XLR, since even 1° of cant will cause a miss at distance.

Had no idea you could cant a red dot; never occurred to me it was possible!
That is THE solution to the magnification/CQB shot issue

  • This may not be directed at Extreme Long Range Shooting, but definitely Long Range Shooting.

Being able to reach out and punch gongs at 1000yds on a rig whose entire cost is <$900, that ain't too bad.

  •  His looks and speech style remind me of Dan Akroyd's Bass-o-matic commercial.

  • Maybe.

But when he can hit a water bottle at ~1100yds, I'm buying what he's selling...

  • That Mossberg actually looks to be better quality than the $200-more-expensive Savage "Axis" (the Axis stock looks like Tupperware).

Another way to go is to buy a quality used barreled action and stock on Sniper's Hide in the PX section: http://forum.snipershide.com/#snipers-hide-post-exchange.20

  • FYI...

For the budget-minded, SWFA is having a heckuva sale now on some scopes.

First, their 10x42, 30mm Super Sniper.  I've got two of these and just love them for their affordability, clear glass and precise turrets:

And here's their HD 5-25x50, 30mm Super Sniper:

These SWFA scopes have an excellent reputation for value.

  • Since this thread was started by SJ, it put me into the mood to buy a long range "tactical" scope... so, I purchased a Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4-16x44 because it came highly recommended by my gun store and it fell into my budget. I've not mounted it yet, but I'm impressed with the overall quality.

What are the opinions here of this manufacturer and said scope?

  • A very good choice. It should serve you well.

Put a simple Bushnell banner on my 5.56 ruler ranch but have not had the opportunity to do n initial laser boresighting.

One has to go a very long way to find extreme long distance ranges here. Winters up here can impede such things as just going out to plink.

Would be fun to long distance whack Texas wild hogs.

  • In today's Woodpile Report, Ol' Remus links to a decent video on how to take a stock rifle from the box to 1000yds.

And the best part? He does it with my caliber-of-choice, the 7 Rem Mag.
