Ps: Yes, you can get smaller eggs for less, but it doesn’t make sense for big families (and you need 4 eggs for an omelette instead of 3, so…).  A year ago, we were paying $1.78-$1.98/dozen.

PPs: Fake inflation report for December comes out today.

    Quote
    Highest monthly inflation: 13,600,000,000,000,000%
    Prices doubled every: 15.6 hours

The worst case of hyperinflation ever recorded occurred in Hungary in the first half of 1946. By the midpoint of the year, Hungary’s highest denomination bill was the 100,000,000,000,000,000,000 (One Hundred Quintillion) pengo, compared to 1944s highest denomination, 1,000 pengo. At the height of Hungary’s inflation, the CATO study estimates that the daily inflation rate stood at 195 percent, with prices doubling approximately every 15.6 hours, coming out to a monthly inflation rate of 13.6 quadrillion percent.

The situation was so dire that the government adopted a special currency that was created explicitly for tax and postal payments and was adjusted each day via radio. The pengo was eventually replaced later that year in a currency revaluation, but it is estimated that when the currency was replaced in August 1946, the total of all Hungarian banknotes in circulation equaled the value of one one-thousandth of a US Dollar.
    ...
...Hungary was in a weak economic position and the central bank was almost entirely under the government’s control; printing money based on the government’s budgetary needs without any sort of financial restraint.
That last part sounds eerily familiar.

  • Just suspend disbelief a little bit, take the scene for what it is, and realize that the sin of gluttony is not really being committed (Newman only ate about eight eggs).

  • Speaking of eggs… I just whisked some eggs into a pancetta, snap pea, and garlic soup I made. No eggs on the roasted corn or slabs of baby back ribs in the smoker though. :-) Our version of a happy meal.

  • This lady who has raised chicken for 30+ years says that since before halloween she hasn't been getting any eggs.  She changed from using the chicken feed to a mixture of what she had around, goat feed, steel cut oats, black sunflower seeds and now she is getting eggs.  You have to scroll down on the post past the peacock lady portrait to the second frame which is her short 43 second video testimony.  So perhaps the feed has also been weaponized?

Tractor Supply Chicken Feed Reportedly Causing Egg laying to Stop
Online claims have emerged, corroborated by others, that the popular “Producer’s Pride” chicken feed sold by the Tractor Supply chain has been recently altered and that its new formulation is causing chickens to stop laying eggs. Some suggest a deliberate reduction in the amount of protein in the feed may be causing the reduction in egg production....

  • What are some less expensive sources of protein to replace eggs?  (On Fridays?)  What about nuts?  Beans?

  • I wonder if the priest can switch the abstinence to no eggs but chicken meat because eggs had become a luxury and fish is always more expensive :(

I don’t think so because chicken is flesh meat.  In the distant past, eggs and dairy products were to be fasted from on days of total abstinence.  One needn’t eat fish on days of abstinence, either.  I knew a woman who used to insist it was required for Catholics to eat fish!  (I couldn’t convince her otherwise!)  If you live in Florida, I suppose it’s possible to eat the excess of iguanas breeding out of control, or certain times of the year, depending upon your locality, turtles, frogs’ legs, rattle snake, snails, eels, some of which may be available free of charge. If you live in Hawaii however, DO NOT eat wild snails as many carry brain eating amoebas, 100% fatal to humans.

  • Best to get feed from the local grain mill, or buy the ingredients you’d like in bulk and mix your own feed. That’s what my husband does. It is more affordable and you can adjust the rations to the needs of your flock.

The commercial bags at the farm stores is most generally comprised of low quality and old grains. And it’s more expensive. No doubt they are cutting their own costs in their mixes yet charging more.

Wow...  I had no idea about this...  Thanks for sharing!

I am grateful that we have a couple local co-ops near us where we get our grain for a reasonable price.
