  • What are some less expensive sources of protein to replace eggs?  (On Fridays?)  What about nuts?  Beans?
Beans and rice together are a perfect protein.

We had beans a LOT when we were growing up because it was the least expensive form of protein we could get.

My mother also liked to do extra abstinence for the poor souls every week.  So, that was part of it too I think.  My mother gave us the choice as children of abstaining (in addition to Friday) on Mondays every week or Wednesdays and Saturdays.  We usually chose Monday because then it was one more day with meat per week.  😅

  • Best to get feed from the local grain mill, or buy the ingredients you’d like in bulk and mix your own feed. That’s what my husband does. It is more affordable and you can adjust the rations to the needs of your flock.

The commercial bags at the farm stores is most generally comprised of low quality and old grains. And it’s more expensive. No doubt they are cutting their own costs in their mixes yet charging more.
Oo!  Love this!  My mother used to get her horse and cow grain that way for the farm (but it was a farm not a grainery I think)...  But then the place she got it from recently shut down...  😣

  • I wonder if the priest can switch the abstinence to no eggs but chicken meat because eggs had become a luxury and fish is always more expensive :(
    Technically...

A priest can give dispensations from fasting and abstinence whenever he thinks it is necessary.  Usually it is just for health reasons, but sometimes there are others as well.  In the U.S. though with JUST Friday being a day of abstinence, I don't think one day a week is too bad to abstain.  😅

Technically I have almost always exempt from fasting and abstinence since being married because of either nursing or being pregnant.  But, I do still try to abstain on Fridays.

I don't think even those markets will be available to us. (without the mark, that is) It will be a prepper, foraging, bartering. situation. (and gardens if they don't catch you)

We have been trying to learn more about foraging and what foods in our area are edible.  We figure if a major disaster happens hunting for food, herbs and such will probably be our best bet to survive just like when the first pioneers came...

Here is a neat site called Forager Chef.  He has a lot of interesting ideas and information on foraging and cooking food from one's local area:

Also, my parents have a horse farm with about 140 acres 1/3 of which is flat land which we could farm if we were desperate. The other 2/3 is woods which have an abundance of deer and other woodland animals for hunting.  They also have a running creek which goes through the property for a good water supply.

  • Anyone considering training themselves to not eat everyday as a prep?  Just curious as I've thought about it.

  • You could just start doing the older fasts, you would naturally find alternatives after a while

    and fish?
Great to know your plants/weeds for foraging.

One option would be for me to gain about 250 pounds before then.  That way I would have plenty of calories in storage to get me by for about a year.  :laugh1:

But storable food, seeds, those kinds of things ... perhaps some chickens even in a smallish yard.

Already doing that, markets, (no cheaper than shops), second hand shops, discount stores. We will be able to barter, hunt and forage for a while.

But these won’t be available if we don’t take the mark. But if we do, the gates of Hell will be wide open. The Chinese ate grass at times. Not a nice prospect, but better to starve than burn in hell.

Your question is being discussed in many threads here on CI.

We have tried to fish in our stream but it is really more of a little creek.  So, we almost never get fish big enough to eat...  Maybe we could get practice in at cooking crawfish though?
