  • Here in Phoenix our gas prices have been rising rapidly.    It's now 2.69 gal, about a 60% price increase in the last 10 weeks or so, is that going on in other parts of the country?

  • You're complaining! We pay $1.30 a litre. Roughly that's $5 a gallon. The rest of the world subsidizes the U.S.!

  • Yes, it's been rising in Michigan for the last few months too. 2.45 - 2.65 per gallon depending where you buy it at the moment.

Everything I see on the internet indicates that European gas taxes are somewhere between 75%-85% of that price.  No.  You don't subsidize our lower prices, our governments just don't levy as high a tax, though there are many advocates here in the U.S. who call for higher fuel taxes specifically because the amount of taxes on fuel is so much less than the taxes in Europe, an argument that makes absolutely no sense at all.

  • Yeah here in Brazil it is about 2 dollars a liter also.  Interestingly, the petroleum comes from here, some of which eventually ends up...in the US.
We conclude logically that religion can give an efficacious and truly realistic answer to the great modern problems only if it is a religion that is profoundly lived, not simply a superficial and cheap religion made up of some vocal prayers and some ceremonies...

  • Last Thursday, in the afternoon, the price per litre was .93 at most stations, give or take a .01.  That evening, 1.13 per litre.  In one day.  It has stayed at that level to date.

I meant to check Zerohedge to see what caused such a dramatic jump, but did not have time.

Clearly, oil companies are not sending their oil to the U.S. in order to make less money than they can in Brazil.  I presume the high cost is due to taxes.

  • For those outside the US please let us know what country you are in.

I was in England about 35 years ago and even then their petrol was 2x what we were paying in the US.   I think US gas tax is high, I can't imagine European taxes.  I read somewhere that oil companies make about 6cents per gallon of "pure" profit,  The state of AZ makes 18cents a gallon of PURE profit on gas !  The fed takes another 18cents of PURE profit on gas ! !  So the government makes 600% MORE profit than the producer does.

I believe that the reason for higher prices for gasoline outside the United States is lack of availability. The United States is still a major producer of oil.

The U.S. is not in the top ten producers which are Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Iran, Iraq,   Kuwait, UAE, Russia, Libya and Nigeria.

My country, Australia, produces more than enough for our own needs, yet we still pay double the price in the U.S.

And in a poor country like Madagascar, with an average per capita income of $260 p.a., they pay the same price as in Australia. Taxi drivers need to have a down payment which is collected from the passenger near the start of a journey in order to purchase enough for the journey.

Recently it was announced that the United States produced enough for its own consumption. This is why I believe that gas prices are lower in the United States compared to other countries.
