  • The Greater Depression is all too real. Every day, people are losing their jobs, and finding it impossible to find another one. Just today I got an e-mail from a customer:

    Hello,

My husband's job is ending in a few days and as much as I would like to purchase these, I feel I cannot.

I am disabled and my husband is having a hard time physically also. I'm so sorry.

I truly love the music but right now, we  are pretty worried about money.

    Sincerely,

    (name censored for privacy)

  • I heard a saying once: "It's a recession when other people are getting laid off. It's a depression when YOU get laid off."

It's unbelievable how cruel our "capitalist" economy is. It grinds human beings down like so many cows into hamburger meat. It takes honest, hard working people and makes them question their own worth, since they "can't find a job" even though they are physically able and quite willing to work.

In a sane society, a man who isn't lazy shouldn't have to worry about going hungry. But not in the modern world...

  • I been out of work since January, and my unemployment insurance
fund has ran out.  My home has been foreclosed. I am living with
relatives. However, I have my strong belief in God, and the
True Roman Catholic Church, and say my daily Rosary.

  • I started a new job 2 weeks ago, and collected 2 paychecks.
On Friday, I received a letter saying that my services is no
longer needed, and I am being laid off. The reason, the
company needs to save cost by having less employees. This
company employed 50 people just a year ago, now has 5.
Sales, and internet sales have fallen from 200 orders a
day a year and a half ago, to less than 10 daily sales.
Black Friday there was no increase of sales.

    Thank you for saying this...

I rant and rave about this all the time, nobody seems to get it, or care. I think it's profoundly wrong and unjust, but others seem to shrug.

My (protestant) family doesn't get that the jobs they had, and are retired from (union jobs, pensions, healthcare, stability, high school education) are gone.

They don't get why my cousins are all unemployed and getting foreclosed upon. I'm the only one, praise be to God, that hasn't yet-- not to say that my job is secure, it isn't, but I've managed to stay working (again, praise be to God!).

They don't understand that my cousins moving back in with their parents are not lazy-- they really aren't. One of them is a very, very hardworking guy, but there was no metalwork or welding with every plant in the county relocating to Mexico. There went the house, etc.

It's infuriating, because I see good people having a horrible time of it. I get mad because I have a baby and I wonder what on earth she has to look forward to -- it's going to get worse, I doubt better.  :sign-surrender:

  • Iuvenalis, I'd tell your parents to consider that whatever the cousins are able to contribute to the household while with their parents is probably appreciated, too!

I frankly think the forced return to extended-family living is a blessing of our present hardships. Protestants have a closer connection to exclusive nuclear families than ethnic Catholics and might not see it that way, and also the Protestant ethic that identifies good fortune with the grace of God makes it hard for some to admit they face economic hardships because for them, that is the same as a Catholic admitting to something like doubts about the Eucharist.  One risks excommunication to voice such things.

You're very insightful. I, growing up in a protestant family, I'd say you have stated it very succinctly. Excellent points.
