    • Anybody here have any opinion about cryptocurrencies. I'm thinking of buying some ethereum. I hear that if ethereum can get a deal with apple, it'll really take off. Preppers who are interested in cryptocurrencies argue that going off grid in a national emergency will already take out your bank account anyway.

    • Living in Central America you should be an expert in surviving wild inflation and losing everything in the bank. You should be teaching the Gringos, not asking them questions. Ask your grandparents instead. Cryptocurrencies are just another swindle, like  your local currency. The most important thing is to have a job or some income sources based on products and services that people can't do without. As far as extra money, silver, gold, cigarettes, toilet paper, (soap is a big one in Cuba).....

    • The whole cryptocurrency thing might be a good investment for the short run - or the very, very long run - like maybe 50 years or something. In the mean time, it takes actual money to actually buy the stuff - no?

    Since I was a kid people have prepped, expecting a bank/country/world/etc. take over by the enemies and the shedding of blood in the streets, the end of civilization, the end of the world, nuclear war, martial law or whatever other Y2K like calamity arises.

    Agreeing with Last Tradhican, if such a thing ever happens, people will be killing each other over a loaf of bread or a piece of meat, cryptocurrencies or gold bars, they will be as worthless as dirt.

    • The crypto currencies are used by the deepstate to run their illegal drug, organ-stransplant and weapons transfers- then they launder it. Since there is no central source because of the block-chain, it goes on relatively undetected. The good part for the deep state is it is almost untraceable. The bad part for the deep state is that it is almost untraceable. The FED ,IMF  are frantic because it looks like cryptocurrencies, however risky, have their uses and are here to stay and bypass their central control. Russia just approved Etherium as a currency because they couldn't find a way to get rid of it. If you can't beat 'em...I don't think bit coin will be one of the survivors , however....it's been over speculated by the hedgefunds.

    You are not wrong.  Its the same reason why things like diamonds and expensive art were used in covert/illicit dealings in the past.  The difference is that crypto currencies are not based off a tangible asset.  I see it as a big Ponzi scheme right now.  The more money people throw at it the bigger it gets.  If they start making a ''bitcoin" for sections of land in different nations or tag a nation currency to it, then I'll be really nervous.

    • Stuborn is right.  Cryptocurrencies will only be valuable as long as the economy doesn't crash.  In the event it does crash, crytocurrencies, regular currencies, gold, silver, etc., will all be worthless.  None of those things have any value, beyond what people believe their value is.  In the event of a total economic collapse, people will not want currency or precious metals.  They will want food, water, shelter, and the like.  I doubt you'd be able to trade a gold bar for a can of beans if things really got bad.

    • The people who have plenty of beans will want gold/silver because these have been money since the beginning of time, and when the economy returns to normal, those that have gold/silver will be rich.  So, yes, you will be able to trade precious metals for food, you just won't get a good deal because those that have plenty of food will have bargaining leverage.
