Title: Challenger Space Shuttle - the untold story
Post by: Neil Obstat on April 07, 2018, 06:42:03 PM
.
This movie came out in 2006 but I don't think it's been posted on CI before.
.
There are several videos about the Challenger disaster, but this one goes into the personal lives of some of the key persons.
.
The O-ring seals were eventually recognized as the failure point, and this film gives a lot of specifics how that happened.
.
The spelling error "Shutlle" is out of the ordinary.

.
Bottom line: space flight is very dangerous.
Like in any new frontier, the pioneers risk their lives so future generations can have opportunities.
.
If you want to see what research has produced based on physical evidence, this video summarizes the conclusions derived from reconstruction of recovered shuttle debris in the ocean. The crew cabin probably survived the explosion but immediately lost cabin pressure at very high altitude. Investigators had data that suggests that perhaps three of the astronauts initiated their emergency oxygen supply, but without any backup parachute system it plunged into the sea at 200 mph killing any possible survivors on impact.

Human arrogance on the part of certain NASA officials and Morton Thiokol doomed the Challenger. Robert Beaujolis recently passed away. He was a guest of the IEEE here in Alberta where he gave a lecture at our local space sciences centre. I was too young and would have not fit in with the engineering crowd ( my brother a Peng, was the host for the event so he got to meet Mr Beaujolis.) This was in the late eighties.

Poor Columbia many years later. Doomed from lift off after that insulation impact. :'(
