I am trying to get a homeless guy a cellphone so as to get him hooked up with SS benefits. I can't loan him mine as I have never owned one. Is there a type of phone that can be leased or something w/o a contract? Possibly a prepay for 200 minutes or so.

Does anyone know if there is such a thing?

Liberty Wireless offers a no contract plan - buying by phone you can get it for as little as 200 min for 10 dollars. They piggyback off sprint network.

There is a company that will give free phones and up to 250 min.. True. I got a postcard in the mail, but I can not recall the name of the company. It read like this: you can get a free cell phone IF you are TANF welfare, on food stamps, SSI, TANF( temp. assistance for needy families) school free lunches and etc. So, there is a way. I thought it was Sprint but whoever they are, I am sure many other companies will jump in for the money. Federal money. No bills with these phones. Just check around.

Tracphone sells good quality phones for $10 at Walmart, but you have to buy the card to add minutes.

60 minutes with three months' service is about $20, but all minutes are doubled now so you get 120.

Quality and range are very good, and the company was ranked highly for performance.

This is all the phone anyone needs for outside the house

Call long distance cheap with it

Use it for emergencies on the road

You'd have to be an idiot to get those fancy pants Big Brother smartphones

Even stupider to get a phone service contract

Never, under any circuмstances, bring your cell phone with you into confession; even if it's off! Advice from a very good priest. Even if the thing is off, the speaker is still able to record and any noise can be transmitted if a satellite is aimed in that direction. :reporter:

What are you talking about? Cellphones don't communicate with satellites but radio masts on the ground (cells) hence the name. Satellites are in space, many, many mile above the earth. Your cellphone cannot broadcast a signal into space.

If it is switched off, then it is off. It can't communicate with anything anymore than your microwave can cook food if it is switched off.

There is rumor that some providers can activate the phone's mic and transmitter even when it is turned off, at the request of police. I know that's very possible, but don't know how true it actually is. The only way to be sure, is to remove the battery.

This makes sense- think about an old computer you haven't used in years. When you turn it on, the clock time and date should still be accurate. Why? Because there is a battery on the motherboard that keeps the BIOS settings and keeps the clock running. That's why if you ever want to reset your BIOS to factory condition, best way is to remove the battery for thirty seconds or so- the volatile memory will be lost without that power to keep the flip-flops in the proper state. If a motherboard can "store" volatile memory for years and years with the power generated by a small quarter-sized battery, even when the computer is off, then a cell phone, with its powerful battery, would have no problem randomly transmitting while "off".

With that being said I will tell you one thing I know is a fact- every bit of data your cell phone sends through that tower is copied and stored indefinitely. Think you erased that drunken party picture you sent to one of your friends? Wrong, your cell service provider has a copy of it. Erased that embarrassing text message to your boss? Oh well, cell provider has a copy of it.
