  • I'm considering beekeeping as a hobby (and a backup career in the face of the AIpocalypse for jobs).

Currently looking at some beginner/hobbyist courses, and to start with 1-2 top bar hives in the backyard if conditions (council, neighbours) permit.

Anyone here have experience with beekeeping? Any tips, guides for turning a small profit at the local farmers markets?

  • Are you in the US?

Here in the UK I kept bees when I was younger. They are a lot of hard work if you want to get surplus honey. When the colony is increasing rapidly in the spring you need frequent interventions and manimpulations to prevent swarming - which is not easy as swarming is the natural process by which honeybee colonies reproduce. If they do swarm you lose half the colony, or more, and are unlikely to get surplus honey that year (depending on the time of year and nectar flow) and more likely to have to feed them sugar syrup to keep them alive through the winter.

There are some useful YouTube channels worth looking at e.g. The Bee Whisperer.

  • Check with your local Cooperative Extension Service to see what publications they have and short courses your state's Land Grant University may offer. They would also know if there is a local beekeepers association or club. If it isn't over yet visit your local county fair, beekeeper groups often have an exhibit / information booth at those.

I'm staffing the Cooperative Extension Master Gardener booth at the Benton-Franklin County Fair (eastern Washington) this afternoon. The beekeepers usually have a booth in the same building that we are in, I'll see if they have resource information I can pass along.

  • I had worked for 2 large beekeepers in western Canada, plus I had 30 hives. Up here there are about 5 parasites that weaken bees so that they can barely survive winter if left outdoors.  Very cold up here at times. But with bad corn pesticides, dessecation sprays etc. pretty hard to keep the population growing.
The bottom line about honey: you need excellent flower access/ locations... but keep away from neighbors. You must register with somw sort of Association, to keep diseases from spreading, American foulbrood etc.  Nobody likes a honeyhouse around...bees sting and are annoying to say the least. God created a fascinating creature! .A great hobby, hope you enjoy it!

Layens hives and local bees are the direction I've been going the last year or two.  My reading and research on this method has me convinced its a better way than the methods I've tried previously.  My experience and successes are limited.

  • Unfortunately the local beekeepers association did not have a booth at the county fair this year, a lady came by the Master Gardener booth looking for them also.  Check with your local cooperative extension office to see what publications they have.  They would know if there is a beekeepers group in your area, and if the land grant university in your state has a bee program and might offer short courses and field days.

  • Personally, I’m not the one to ask! Bees are indeed fascinating. God refers to them in good terms in Scripture. Unlike humans, being accused of having a “hive mind” is truly a compliment!
Check on YouTube. There are all manner of bee-keeping, bee related channels. That should give you some leads.
