  • Who is knowledgeable about archery?

I have been thinking about getting archery equipment to give as a Christmas present.

For simplicity I had thought of getting a simple recurve bow, but it really looks like compound bows have far outstripped recurve bows.

    Any advice is appreciated.

  • Bishop Pivuranus.  The high school children do the archery and they win trophies.  They are in Nebraska?

I'm by no means a expert, but I personally prefer a recurve. I have a Bear Kodiak 50lb which I can't even pull anymore. So I guess the question would be... would this be for a child or an adult?  A equivalent bow, 50lb draw, most teenagers could pull.  I don't know too many adults that can pull a 50lb recurve. Hope this helps.

  • for a man: a recurve a bow is a manly weapon.
for a child a recurve bow of lesser weight
for the elderly and disabled compound

there is no sportsmanship in letting the pullies do the work for you. BTW my Father was a state champ in NY. on a hunting trip he witnessed a woman put down a Bear with a 30 pound recurve bow

  • I love bows and arrows!  My parents got me a compound bow when I was 9 or 10.  Definitely get something that does not have much more than 50 lbs. drawback, otherwise it will be difficult for most people to use.

If the bow is for hunting you will need different arrows than if it is primarily for target practice.  Oh, and one neat thing you could also get a target.  My parents got us a nice big sack one that has lasted us for the past 15 years.

  • Thanks for the pointers. I like the simplicity of a recurve (or long) bow. This may be a gift for the kids, so will probably look for an inexpensive 30# pull recurve.
