I kind of live in the boonies so no Whole Foods OR Trader Joe's, but I do love them both.  I appreciate the tip, because a dollar is a big deal for me. :) I just got a great deal on whole almonds and I'll be making almond butter. Tastes as good as TJ's for about half the price ounce per ounce.

I am no nutter but I do like animals and try to treat them respectfully. Around me in eastern New Mexico, there are scads of dairies. I have friends who work there and let me tell you humans are the most disgusting animals of all. Even my friend who just goes to test the milk brags about using the cows as punching bags, often breaking ribs with particularly good blows. The people who work there regularly are even worse. They hit cows with shovels, unnecessarily shock them with cattle prods, kick them as hard as they can, try to break bones, and wworse, for no other reason than just because they can, and because the cows cant fight back. So Ive cut down a lot on milk, which I love, and even on meat. If I know the milk comes from a dairy here, I absolutely will not buy it.

There are small family dairies and farmers who treat their cows like family, and I try as much as possible to support those. Huge factory farms and dairies though are an affront to God in their blatant mistreatment and poor stewardship of Gods creation, putting profits above being good people. Because I know for a fact that people who can, with no remorse, treat animals in such a horrible manner, can easily do so to humans, too.

Oh I agree that corporate farming can be very bad and ran with greedy, corrupt values.

I live near a lot of turkey and hog farms. The smell alone proves that it is too many animals in a small space. I don't eat all that much meat because I usually cannot afford "the good kind."

I agree with you, theology101, that feedlots and the like are dismal places, indeed. Driving past them is bothersome to me. It gives me a very defined feeling of sadness, and sometimes anger. I don't believe God intended them to be treated that way. And you are certainly on to something when saying that people who mistreat animals could easily do the same to humans. When I see people abusing animals in the ways in which you described, it makes me wonder if their interior life is also filled with violence and anger. It would seem that way since our actions flow from the interior.

I think the thing that displeases me so greatly about animal rights people in general is the amount of sentimentality and anthropomorphism that is displayed within the group. It seems as though they put animals on the same level as humans, and reality (God) clearly says that it is not to be so. Beasts are subject to us, and of course we should tend to them, and treat them as we should treat any of God's creation, but these people take it too far. My family raised all of our own meat, and we took diligent care of our livestock. We kept them on healthy pasture, gave them adequete shelter, etc., but my parents always made sure that my sister and I understood that they were livestock, not pets. To drive the point home, they would name our pigs things like Bacon, and Porker, lol. This way we knew that they would ultimately end up on our table, because that was what they were intended for. There was no sobbing and pleading when the day came to take Bacon to the meat lockers this way.

theology - those brutes ( & I'm not referring to the cows)  in eastern NM at the dairy farm need to be reported.  People who know about what's going on & do nothing are almost as bad as the ones abusing the animals.  How awful!!  There must be a dairy association or some organization that you can report to, even anonymously.
