Off-grid really on the brain, eh?
Regard all of my posts as unfounded slander, heresy, theologically specious etc
I accept Church teaching on Implicit Baptism of Desire.
    Francis is Pope.
    NO is a good Mass.
    Not an ironic sig.

I wish I had a nickel for every guy who did something similar -- built a tiny home, lived in an RV, built some exotic residence which is cheap, off-grid, and/or debt free.

    A great start, sure.

But where do you put the natural-sized number of kids in that thing? Without contraception, most healthy couples marrying before age 30 will have 6+ children.

Like smart cars (which are great on gas, I'll concede!), they do NOTHING for me, with my 9 kids.

If I was single -- especially "terminally single" (looking like marriage is never going to happen) I'd certainly want to simplify my life in this way. But you need space and land to raise children properly. A bit of isolation from the world, too.

  • I guess the best way is to buy your land as a single guy and start building.
Generally you start out with one child, then extend as the family grows.

Except for his use of the plural pronoun we don’t much. I had friends who did what he did, and sadly they could not conceive.

Every family I know who lives off grid started off with one child.

  • Yes- I've been following him off and on for a couple of years. The way he built his power source is amazing. He's built a whole "complex" since then.

  • I think the point of these videos is a "proof of concept" that simple/off-grid living is possible.  Most that do it, don't have large families, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't work for large families.  Just build the house bigger, make the solar bigger, make the hydroelectric system bigger.

The issue is one would have to start a project with future growth of family in mind.  That's easier said than done.

The main problem is the banking/construction industries aren't set up to loan/build these kinds of properties.  But it's definitely possible, with planning.

Kids provide motivation. The off-grid folk I know do so out of necessity. It is a struggle and an  adventure. No need for entertainment.

  • I bought a small house and I will have to graduate the kids to the bunkhouses when they get old enough ;)

I think having something is better than nothing, I am not going to fool myself into thinking that I'd be better off if I waited to go off-grid.

Kids provide motivation sure, but they also fall into ponds, scream, cut their hands, run away. It'd be easy to do something like this if you started when you only had one child or are just married but going into the bush and building a place and trying to be as self sufficient as possible is extremely difficult and costs a good bit of money to get there. Try doing this with 4 kids under 7 and a husband working full time. It'd take an insane amount of work.

I would love to be off grid in some remote location, but I'd also like to be relatively close to mass and other traditional Catholics too, the latter is more important to me.
