I understand that when the basilicas, cathedrals, churches, etc. were being built in the Middle Ages, before missals, the beautiful carvings, paintings, ceilings, etc. were there for meditation and uplifting the soul during Mass. Even babies and children could get something out of it.

These days I use my imagination to decorate where I attend, imagining the ceiling is gone and open to heaven, and that the altar and walls are very ornate. I now understand how the Baroque artists could have imagined almost limitless improvement, variety, and detail.
