A few points:

1. You can only store so much gas; it goes bad. Gasoline life is measured in SINGLE DIGIT MONTHS. This is slightly extended if you put additives into gasoline to stabilize it. Also extended if you store PREMIUM rather than the cheapest gas. You want the highest octane possible (i.e., the smallest % of ethanol).

2. Despite #1, you CAN easily store GAS CANS. When there's a gas panic, you can't get gas cans for love or money. The guy in the picture storing up 10 gas cans worth? He probably owned those gas cans already -- OR he was the lucky one to clear out the Wal-mart of their gas cans. The next 10,000 people will be S.O.L.

3. STAY THE **** HOME - stop driving around for fun! This is the CÖVÌD era; many people are working from home or unemployed. If you didn't live in a crappy suburban home or apartment, you'd have fun things to do right at home. The only time I get "cabin fever" is when we have a rash of storms, rendering the outdoors a soupy mess. Makes it hard to get between buildings. But in good weather, we have plenty of things to do, even to get a change of scenery.

4. Related to #3: Unlike food, you don't need gas to survive. Not being able to get food? That's a big deal. Humans need food to survive. Not able to get gas? Just have to stop driving so much, I guess. How did people survive in the 1800s? Even though modern man needs gas to get to the grocery store, etc. you can try to arrange your trips to be more efficient -- buy more than 3 days' worth of food at the grocery store, for example. If I could buy 3 months worth I would. I am limited when it comes to refrigerated/fresh/frozen goods, as they require bulky refrigeration units to preserve and store. Canned goods, boxed goods, baking supplies? There's no reason not to have a 1 year supply of these.

And rather than storing fluff like bread, vegetables, ice cream in your freezer, you should use a high % of your freezer capacity for solid, heavy foods, mostly meat. Either meat, or complete meals with meat in them. But the highest density, food wise, is to store pounds of raw hamburger, beef, chicken, pork, sausage, etc. Vegetables and fruits can come from your garden, your orchard, or a can. Bread products can be stored outside the freezer, in wheat seed (to be ground into flour) or flour form. Desserts and treats can easily stored in your cabinet at room temperature. Don't waste your precious freezer space on sweets.

Well, this gas run was caused by the shutdown of that pipeline due to a cувєr-attack.

A state of emergency has been declared by the federal government following an attack on critical infrastructure that has left one of the largest oil pipelines in serious trouble.
The declaration, which was issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on May 9, encompasses 17 states plus the District of Columbia, and is in response to the shutdown of one of the largest oil pipelines in the United States.
The Colonial Pipeline supplies approximately 45 percent of fuel consumed on the East Coast, and the shutdown is already effecting its operations. According to the company, more than 5,000 miles of pipeline have been shut down in response to a ransomware attack on its system. Experts have determined that, if the pipeline is not operational within the next few days, gas prices may start to rise. As of May 10, the pipeline has been out of operation for four days.
On May 9, it was reported that the investigation into the matter has determined the perpetrator of the attack to be a criminal ransomware gang known as ‘Dark Horse.’
According to reporting by The Hill:

“The regional emergency declaration from the Department of Transportation lifts restrictions for motor carriers and drivers who are providing assistance to areas that are suffering a shortages of ‘gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and other refined petroleum products’ in the wake of the Colonial pipeline shutdown… The declaration grants drivers and carriers relief from ‘Parts 390 through 399 of Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations except as restricted herein.’ These regulations are reinstated once a driver or commercial motor vehicle is used for interstate commerce that does not provide assistance to help the shortage.”

The regional emergency declaration affects the following states:

• Alabama
• Arkansas
• The District of Columbia
• Delaware
• Florida
• Georgia
• Kentucky
• Louisiana
• Maryland
• Mississippi
• New Jersey
• New York
• North Carolina
• Pennsylvania
• South Carolina
• Tennessee
• Texas
• Virginia

The state of emergency will remain in effect until the end of the emergency, or until midnight on June 8.

I had errands to run today, and tried to find someplace to top off my tank this afternoon on the way home.  Nothing to be found except diesel.  My son asked me to take him to Target tonight, and I told him no, that's all the way across town, 20 miles each way, we cannot be doing unnecessary driving.
