  • Figured this sub forum was as good as any to post this. I'm curious, is anyone here into wood carving? I'm considering it as a hobby right now. I would love to be able to one day have the skill to carve religious images or figures.

  • By the way, this seems to be a very informative and thorough book:

  • That's pretty cool. I can't imagine the discipline and education it took to be able to create those trains. What a master. Thanks for sharing.

  • Never mind about the 'education'- this guy was simply a genius. He only had a 2nd grad education according to the video.

  • Once you get good I'll commission an icon of John the Baptist. When you get really good I'll commission one of St. George and the Dragon.

I'll be taking a 60 hour course in woodcarving in the upcoming year.

Nice Graham! Well since it seems you're going to be an expert too, I'll commission a carving of the Pieta from yourself lol You looking at a local community college/ adult ed for this? I want to sign up for one, but they look sort of pricey around here (a few hundred dollars!)

You can find instructional videos on Youtube for just about any kind of craft. It ain't gonna make you an expert, but it'll help you familiarize yourself somewhat with your choice craft. You might even find videos by professionals who have DVDs or books for sale, if they aren't putting all of their info out for free.

Start with soap or home-made plaster in  milk cartons.  This prepares for the reductive process, the taking away of material.  Start by making a sphere.  Just to get used to the carving, which you might already have an affinity for if you love carving various foods or scraping stuff.

For wood, you need to find out what your favorite tool is, what fits your hand.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks Liz! I've heard of using soap a few times now. I like the plaster idea too. Time will tell if its a skill I can have affinity for it, and it for me, but its very intriguing so far.

  • You are very welcome.  Whittling is a relaxing thing to do anyway, whether a finished product is made.

I like digging and scraping in my paintings and with clay.  I admire wood carving very much, but I'm not very good at it at all.
