This guy was using classical pronunciation. No wonder some saw it as a prank.

When I was in Rome, I often started conversations in Latin with an attempt at an Italian accent, which is basically ecclesiastical pronunciation. It usually worked out, though maybe 20% of the time they wanted to shift to another language because my "Italian" was poor. Only interesting problem was when visiting a convent; the nun I talked to was from France and did not speak Italian.
