I just got my first smartphone (used) and have been playing around with it. It's an LG Optimus with Android. I did a factory reset and rooted it. If I had known how cool these things are I would have gotten one a long time ago. It's like an electronic toolbox. I downloaded a ruler app measures objects placed on the screen. And I downloaded Camscanner, which will come in handy scanning docuмents. And GrooveIP for free calls. I think the one I like best is called Shazam. You point the smartphone at some music and it will detect the song and give you information about it. It detects some pretty obscure stuff.
What apps do you all use?

I haven't got a smartphone (see posts elsewhre), but what you have does sound interesting. Maybe someone out there can write a cathinfo.com app?

HIARCS Chess—it is the engine that won the World Computer Chess Championship.
Dragon Dictation
Ballistic FTE (Field Tactical Edition)
Pandora Radio
I have been unable to find a Douay-Rheims.

ShopSavvy Barcode Scanner-
I almost buy nothing, especially bigger purchases, without using this. You scan any barcode of any product you want to buy, and it will give you online, and local prices. Lets say I'm shopping for a radio, and I'm at Wally World. I scan the barcode of the radio I'm looking to buy, and it will tell me how much I can get it on Amazon, other websites and local stores (Target, K-Mart, etc).
Also, get a better messaging program, if you text your family/ friends
The best I've found is Handscent SMS

Get Amazon PriceCheck then go into bookstores and scan books you want. Watch all the bad looks you'll get from the clerks there as they see their overpriced books not be sold (Barnes and Noble type stores, not the mom-and-pop bookshops, please).

What benefit do you see with this program. I didn't download it, partly because I had to pay (Ima cheepee lol), but I'd pay .99 for somethign that was worth it. But looked very Vatican II to me... "All the encyclicals since Vatican Council II"....?

Here's a link: https://www.olivetree.com/store/product.php?productid=16576
I downloaded Dragon Dictation, but uninstalled it since my phone has a native voice dictation program.

I'm using RedLaser for barcode scanning, CameraZoomFX as a replacement for the native app, Beautiful Widgets, avast antivirus, Dolphin browser, Dropbox, File Expert, Google Sky Map (which pointed to the sky will tells you about the constellations), MoboPlayer, Pano (to make panoramas with the camera), Pulse for news, Superuser, Titanium Backup, AdFree, and an awesome guitar tuner with an inappropriate name.
I want to try out these soon:
SpeechTransPro (which can take foreign speech and translate it)
Viber (free calls to any country)
Wifi File Explorer
Root Explorer
Lapse-it (time lapse photography)
Also app called Clik that may one day allow you to wirelessly use your smartphone on your TV.

You should get one! Even if I didn't use it as a phone I would still get a lot of use out of it. Just think: a camcorder and camera in your pocket.
As for the phone, I'm not using a phone plan. I just use GrooveIP (which is $5) with GoogleVoice, and all my calls are free.
I've been trying to find an app that forces forums to look good on android, but haven't found anything yet.

Grrrrrr... I just bought a "Douay Rheims" from iTunes... but it uses the Protestant naming of the books. Some "Catholic" Bible. I requested my money back.

It would better than great to have an app that would pull up the correct breviary prayers for the day, and a toggle to go into an expanded treasury of approved prayers and litanies, etc., as well as a correct Bible.
-
A ruler app level app like Xclinometer, and smart ruler.
Gps status for remembering where you park your car.
Mixzing is my favorite music player.
Accuweather (although not accurate better than the weather channel)
If you like hiking or the outdoors you can get topo maps on your phone with Rmap,
Record tracks with my tracks
Cardio trainer records tracks as well but aso counts calories and tells you your pace.
Moto torch (turns on and off the LED flash)
AAA discounts.

If you do not have an unlimited texting plan, get text now. That gives you free unlimited texts.

I backed up my phone with Titanium Backup yesterday. It took about 5 minutes. I'm going to try out one of the mods they have for these phones, maybe Reborn ROM. If something goes wrong I can restore my backup.

-Amazon app
-mint.com app
-newegg
-AAA discounts (if you're a AAA member, shows all the business nearby you on a map that offer AAA pricing)
-Pulse newsreader is okay, not all the sources I want to read, but great interface
-Dolphin browser (default android is lame for getting me locked into too many mobile sites, and chrome for android seems to have been pulled)
-evernote
-dropbox
-scanner radio (a police/fire/EMS scanner app)
-amazon mp3, pandora, iheartradio
-a couple bank apps (much faster than visiting the website via the phone browser
-and our city has an app that lets me report potholes, graffiti, etc.
-
I'm using Dropbox, Pulse and Dolphin too.
I also just got Lapse-It, which creates time lapse videos. I tried it out washing dishes and set some music to it. Really great program.
And also Wifi File Explorer, which allows access to android from a web browser.
Also got a free app called Panorama, which takes panorama pictures.
I want to get a bigger smartphone in the future with more internal storage. This Optimus only has 175 mb.
-
In android market - or play as they call it now - you could type proofs of God's existence for an interesting app.
-
Is that last post a troll?
I made some time-lapse videos recently. What a great app! I would say the guitar tuning app and the time-lapse app make it worth having, even if i didn't use it for anything else.
Now if I can find a way to block the government from being able to turn the camera and audio on. There have to be some hacks out there.

App 2 SD is another good one. It moves all your apps to the SD card to free up internal storage space.
I recently scanned a 100 page book with Camscanner. It's tedious, but it got the job done. Camscanner has a batch scan option, which sped up the process. After scanning I checked each page for legibility, and only had to rescan 3 or 4 pages. The less motion of the camera the better, and it's best if you can make the page you're scanning as level as possible, which can be difficult with bound pages. There are different settings for scanning quality, with High Enhance being the best and Gray Mode being the weakest. I went with the High Enhance mode, which produced a 19mb file made up of 100 pages. Gray Mode is okay, but it just looks like photos of the pages, and doesn't have the familiar bleached look of a PDF. The High Enhance mode gives you a pretty nice looking PDF.
After I was done scanning the book and creating the PDF I uploaded it to my Dropbox account. I opened it up in Adobe Acrobat, and using the "Recognize Text" tool (which is an OCR), I scanned the PDF to make it searchable.
