...and every work day, for 30 years, he has taken the elevator down to the first floor, has gone to work, and at the end of his work day he has come home by taking the elevator up to the 26th floor and from there walks the rest of the way up by means of the stairway, to his home on the 45th floor. There is nothing unusual about the building or the elevator, which is in working order.

Why does he walk up those stairs instead of just taking the elevator home?

Heard this one years and years and years ago, with one difference.

The version I heard said that when rain is in the forecast, the man takes the elevator all the way up to the 45th floor.

So, why does he only does he only go up to the 26th floor in good weather but goes up to the 45th floor when rain is in the forecast? By the way, the man hates the exercise and doesn't do it for his health.

I think I've heard this before. The reason presumes he never encounters other people in the elevator.

He pushes the floor buttons in the elevator with his umbrella that are too high for him to reach without the umbrella.

Short people sometimes say from personal experience that they can understand the dwarf being too embarrassed to ask anyone for help.

He'd have to be terribly unlucky too if he never happens across someone in the elevator already traveling to any of floors 27-45.
