  • Hey!
    I was just wondering...
Has anybody here read the above series?
If so, would they recommend it?
    Thank you!

  • I do not recommend it at all.  The basic premise is that Greek gods really exist and mate with humans, creating "demi-gods".  The main character is one of these.  So, it promotes pagan religion and subtly diminishes true religion.

Not in the first book, but later in the series, a ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖ character is introduced.  At first, he just has an unrequited crush on another male character.  Later he gets the "happy ending" of finding a boyfriend.

  • I assume you are talking about Nico DiAngelo. :) I have a bunch of NO friends who "love" the series.
Thank you for your feedback, Jaynek!

  • I basically have read the books, considering the amount of information I got from my friends, however, since they are all NO, I felt it would be helpful to get feedback from a trad. I do think the premise is interesting though, and Annabeth and Thalia are interesting characters. However, I will not actually read the books considering the perils! Thanks!

  • I didn't see anything wrong with them years ago, when I attended the NO.  I think I am more sensitive to this sort of thing now.  I let my children read them because I thought it was a way for them to learn about Greek mythology.

The characters of Annabeth and Thalia are interesting, but they reinforce feminist ideas about how women should behave.  They are tough fighters and exhibit few traditionally feminine characteristics.

  • There is a site that I used to use as a good source for book recommendations because she loved to read aloud to her children and she is Catholic. The site was originally called amongstlovelythings.com. However, she changed the focus of the site to reading aloud, changed the domain to readaloudrevival.com, and has made it into a real business-focused endeavor. It's sad because it seems she now has a drive to find more and more "good" books and has subsequently lowered her standards. Two years ago, someone asked about Percy Jackson and she referred the question to someone who had read the entire series. That person basically warned everyone away from the series with a list of disclaimers that excluded any serious Christians (those attempting to form their children in part through good literature). Now, however, it's on one of her lists of recommended books with no obvious disclaimers whatsoever.
