When you retire your old computer, always destroy the
mother board with a sludge hammer, because what
information that you put into that computer is
there forever.
The first computer I ever purchased was from the
salvation army, and after connecting into it. The
previous owner left all her personal information on
it from credit cards, to bank accounts.
Me, being such an honest guy, never bothered with
it, but falling into the wrong hands, would be a gold
mine for thieves. The neighborhood that the store is
in is very under privileged.
Never give away, nor donate your old computer.
Destroy the mother board.

Yes, it is wise to always destroy the hard discs when disposing of old computers.

Do not try covering up the data stored on the hard discs by painting them in white-out.
