Next time, I'd get a spray bottle of ammonia and shoot a couple rounds into the slot before I dropped the mail.

I suspect this is another Jєωιѕн psychoanalyst story, where the puppies were actually cats, trapped inside a dogs body.
They just needed an alpha-cat to free them.
