Does anyone here sing?
I had to join a men's chorus, with no prior experience singing, but apart from it being a bit humbling having to start from stratch while everyone else sounds like angels, I really enjoy the experience!
I sing bass 2.

Do you really think you're a bass?
I can't sing, but I'd like to. There are many old books on google books about it.
Good singing is dependent on a healthy psychological state which enables one to be relaxed. This is why I think opera singers tend to be fat. They cultivate a care-free attitude which can lead to obesity.
The voice is very delicate. Don't screw it up. Practice breathing.
Good luck. It must be a truly great joy to sing well.

I sing and hum all day long. Ok, not the whole day, but a lot.
I've been in a lot of choirs and small groups in highschool and college. I love the sound of blended voices. It's beautiful. I'm currently not part of any musical group and I sorely miss it.

Funny thing is, the first day I walked in I told the choir director, "I don't know what I sing, but I know I'm not a bass". So I sang the baritone part, but a few days later he took me aside and had me sing for him to scope out my vocal range and I'm definitely unable to sing any high baritone or low tenor parts.
I'm most comfortable singing below Middle C. I can sing comfortably from the second "E" below middle C to middle C. I'm still working on singing in the higher bass range.
My voice isn't huge so it probably isn't the virile bass you are thinking of, like the Commendatore scene in Don Giovanni! hehe
I don't sing well at all, but it really is fun learning how to sing!
What Google books would those be? I'm highly interested.

I'm certain you can sing over middle c, you just have to practice relaxation. Be careful though. As for singing very low, don't bother trying. If you can't do it it's no use trying.

Well college choir directors usually don't let just anyone in, so if I were to guess, you're probably better than just the average joe. :)
I felt that I wasn't nearly as polished as many of my peers so I took private voice lessons, and it helped me leaps and bounds. My teacher taught me the fine points that make all the difference like breath control, proper annunciations, singing from the diaphragm, etc. Have you ever considered that? You're a music major, right? Surely you could fit it in as an elective or something. Just an idea.

I was in school and church choir starting when I was very little and through high school. I was in a regional honors choir grades 7-12. Private voice lessons definitely help.
I loved doing musicals and high school show choir more than anything, but neither of those are Traditional Catholic activities.
I gave up singing in and never tried out for choir at my University. It was honestly (and embarrassingly) because I can't read music very well, and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to fake it anymore. I had a feeling the auditions would look more for all around musicality, instead of just voice. Maybe I could have done it.
Now I sing lullabies. :)

Vladimir is modest but he probably has good overall musical sense (rhythm/stress, dynamics, accompaniment, other elements of interpretation/expression), good ears and can sing in tune.
I have to disagree with Tele on one point. It is possible to deepen your singing voice by a pitch or two.

If singing were any more prominent in my life, it would be my profession! :laugh1:
I'm a tenor, pushing the high range.
I seem to have inherited my singing voice from the Irish side of my roots. I didn't know what an Irish tenor was until I want to the seminary: I met several seminarians that had a similar voice -- they were all Australian (Irish).
It's interesting because even among those who have vocal talent there are a wide range of voice types.
My "heroes" include John Gary (70's Irish tenor) and Luke Kelly (Dubliners), but I respect any music that has a coherent melody and where the singer has talent.

LOL Somewhere between my 30's and 40's.

I only sing after Mass, when we have a hymn.
Sometimes we do not have a hymn. Actually, I think we may have a hymn almost all of the time. But last time I went, I do not think that we did.
I need to practice singing.
I intend to at some stage, I'm just not sure when.

Like Sede said I sing after Mass when they have the hymn. God has given me great gifts and blessings, but a singing voice is not one of them. :wink:

Well, this one did! Seriously, I never sang anything seriously before this semester. I still barely know solfege. I even had/have an intonation problem with singing an octave lower than written (but it's gotten better, after it was pointed out to me).

they say it takes a weekly 1/2 hour lesson and an hour of practice daily. Although, I bet you could skate by on 30 minutes a day! :laugh1:

That is still better than most! I admire honesty but I am sure you could hold a tune just fine.
Now proficiency at Gregorian Chant...whew that is tough and difficult for this bass. Our schola sings a little too high even for men. I find even the average bass line a little high for most polyphonic works.
I love singing Ode to Joy in German, with the musical phrasing as per the chorale from LVB's 9th, and not the transcription used in hymn books.
A good cigar or pipe I find really mellows and deepens my voice. I dont recommend though taking up smoking!!!!
