  • TAN Books was purchased by a conservative Novus Ordo company, Saint Benedict Press (Good Will Publishers) in 2009.

They created many videos just as snazzy as this one. They're trying to reach the youngsters, I guess.

Here is the latest video from the SSPX:

But this is certainly disturbing, as I know for a fact that the old owner (Tom Nelson, in his late 70's) was fully Trad whereas the new owners are only conservative N.O.

And the new videos coming out of both "companies" are becoming more similar than I'm comfortable with -- they both attempt to use modern video techniques and sensibilities to appeal to modern man.

I'll admit that TAN Books still has them beat -- for now. But you can see that the SSPX is trying to "update" their image and look to appeal to a new audience. Sound familiar? *ahem* Vatican II *ahem*

I guess where they're at now is about EWTN-level. We'll see where they are in 5 years.

  • There's no comparison. Yeah, the video with Fr.McDonald could be more in depth, but the video from TAN is a bad joke. The narration is so fast and sparse on detail a person who's never heard of Fatima couldn't understand what it's about based on this video, nevermind take the apparition seriously. It's basically a sad random trivia video. At least the SSPX video was professional in it's delivery. Give credit where it's due.

  • I think what struck me was the departure from their grass roots origins.
Archbishop Lefebvre's organization was about truth, keeping the Faith, and doing good works to build up the Church. Usually, there wasn't much time & resources left for things like branding corporations and slick videos produced by outside companies. Usually one of the Faithful would donate his time to edit a given video, etc.

I mean, a video can look good (edited, etc.) without looking like it came right off the Evening News with Dan Rather.

You're right, the only bad part really was the intro (with all the videos scrolling by on a big globe, etc.) it was very "high production" which reminded me of the TAN videos.

    Look at 0:17 to 0:28 and 3:10 to 3:20.

But the actual content of the TAN one(s) were way more irreverent, etc. and I'll give you that.

But Fr. MacDonald was talking rather slow, like this was way more important than just a sermon. This was for TV! It's hard to put into words, but that's the best I can explain it.

But give 'em 5 or 10 years...
