"Archbishop Lefebvre even asked him if he would accept to be consecrated a bishop in 1988. He told us that he refused, proposing Fr. de Galarreta instead. He thought that he lacked the necessary qualities of a Bishop."
In a recent sermon, Fr. Pfeiffer explained that a priest didn't want to be bishop many centuries ago, and just wanted to be left alone in a monastery. But the other priests in his order dragged him out of the monastery and made him bishop. Then later, he didn't want to be pope, but his fellow priests took him to Rome and he was made Pope. He chose the name Gregory. He is now known as St. Gregory the Great.
Pope St. Pius X didn't want to be pope, either. He reluctantly accepted the election. The rest is history.
Sometimes, a man NOT WANTING to be bishop is the best reason to make him one.
On the contrary, someone who rather strives to be bishop and "makes the right moves" to become bishop, ends up being a bad one. We have some recent examples.
Ah-hem.
