What is a Good Pastor Manager?

  • A good pastor of a chapel knows how to manage the chapel.

A good manager learns everyday something new and builds on it.

A good pastor would soon have everyone in the parish acting like a big family all getting along and caring for each other.

A good pastor knows how to repair things and how they work, so that he can do the small things himself and direct others for pay (outside companies) or parishioner volunteers. After all, how can manager know that a maintenance job is needed to be done or if the one doing it knows what they are doing, or if it is a well done job, if the manager does not know anything about the work?

A good pastor sacrifices his comforts for the sake of the parish and parishioners. For example, he would put together a school for the children and prioritize the growing the school, in order to draw more parishioners to build up the collections and grow the chapel. He would not first build for himself a big priory with offices, large kitchen, library, bedrooms.... His priority would always be directed to the help of others.

A good pastor would work hard to help the parishioners prosper in their work, so they can provide for their families and the chapel. He would teach from the pulpit how the parishioners first obligation is to help each other, to hire and do business from within the parishioners, even if it costs a little more. He would teach the workers their obligation to do the best job possible, to always seek to provide the best service to their customers and build a good reputation.

How would you grade your pastor?  Pastors, how would you rate yourselves? It is never too late to change.

He knows "how to stretch a dollar", how to use the money that comes in in the most efficient manner.  I knew a pastor that when he died, they found in his office old undeposited checks for hundreds of thousands of dollars that he never cashed because he did not want to burden the contributor and he found an economical way of doing the job. Compare that with the pastor that gets extra money and immediately uses it for things that are not needed and were not even in any plans till the money came in.

Anyone can eventually fix a problem by throwing money at it, always asking for more money. But what if the money runs out, what then? That is where a good manager shines.

  • An older neighbor who grew up in Philadelphia pre Vatican II told me that church collections would pay for children's Catholic school whole tuition.
Then a new pastor showed up and that stopped. Then parents had to pay tuition that they couldn't afford.  After that Catholic schools allowed non Catholic children who payed the tuition.
May God bless you and keep you

The same priest took a school of 25 students and in the third year had 125 students. Yes, a priests main concern should be leading souls to Heaven, and if he does his job, God provides the means. It is actual no different than parents with their family. For every priest that leads a soul to heaven, there are thousands of parents who did the same for their children and others. The priest is more of a manager for salvation leading parents.

While Pope St. Pius X was born poor, lived poor, and died poor, he didn't let the Church (or the Vatican) disintegrate in disrepair.  Some of you people seem to think that leading souls to heaven is strictly limited to sermons and sacraments.  Leading souls to heaven includes setting an example about how to live as well and Last Tradhidican listed some good things a good priest does.
But I wouldn't refer to him as a "Pastor Manager".

  • Viva. I grew up in Philadelphia. We had two old Monsignor's (Bauer & Marley).  They had been at the parish for decades.  They had it set up that you could send your children to the school for one price.  It was a very reasonable fee per family, wether you had one child or ten, the family fee was the same.  They refused to get rid of the traditional architecture and altar rails etc.. even when not the late 80's early 90's.  They were forced into retirement in their mid 70's.  They managed the parish funds so well and were so loved and respected that tuition was seldom increased.  The new pastor came in, squandered funds ripping out alter rails and "updating" the church that tuition had to be increased per child.  Eventually it got so high that the school was empty...now most of the church pews too☹️

Those old timers managed to educate all who came, keep the pews full, and the doors open for decades.  Modern priest managed to destroy it in a few short years.

One Sunday in particular, old Mons. Bauer described a filthy, nasty, sewer pipe spilling tons of vile garbage in your yard.  He asked who would let their children play in it?  Then he made the connection of the TV spewing filth into your living room and asked how any responsible parent could let their child sit in front of it.  You could have heard a pin drop.

    Mons Bauer and Marley RIP

  • I think a good priest should imitate the Cure of Ars.

If he's handy that's a bonus, but the men in the parish should be taking care of that side of things.

I'm curious, does seminary training include financial management classes?

The Cure of Ars won over the respect of all the men (farmers) in his parish by knowing more about their job than they did. His father did not want to let him go to the priesthood because he was the best worker of all his children. That is one way you win over men. Another is sincerity, which I describe as that the men know with certainty that a person would jump in front of a bullet to save their lives, that the priest is totally dedicated to their welfare, not his own.

Priests dedicated to their own welfare are like Protestant ministers, in it to make a living, in it for their own comforts. The reaction of the faithful to these "hireling" priests will be no different than the America Indian reaction described below. Unfortunately, few priests will heed this advice, very few men ever change their ways, scarcely any.

From:The Life of Fr. De Smet, Apostle of the Rockies:

    Pg 176 -

How is the phenomenal success of these missions to be explained? Many of the Indians possessed admirable natural virtues; they but needed to know Christianity to embrace it. Even the most degraded had preserved a high ideal of the greatness of the power of God. Blasphemy was unknown among them: not presuming to address the “Great Spirit,” they entreated their manitous to intercede for them. Superstition if you will, but beneath it was a religious sentiment which the missionary had only to enlighten and direct. None held back through false pride or prejudice. Even the Sioux, the proudest of the Western tribes, compared themselves to children bereft of a father’s guiding hand, and to the ignorant animals of the prairie, and with touching humility begged the missionary to “take pity on them.”

Such elevated, upright souls could, moreover, appreciate the chastity of the Catholic priesthood. With rare discernment, the Indian understood that, belonging as he does to all men, a priest cannot give himself to one person, and not for an instant did they hesitate to choose the Black Robe, who had consecrated his life to them, rather than the minister in lay dress, installed in a comfortable home with wife and children, devoted to the interests of his family, giving only the time that remained to distributing Bibles”.

Pg 52 - The Indians, meanwhile, were not overlooked. Dispossessed of their lands and driven west by the whites, they now found refuge and support in the Catholic Church. A considerable number of them, whose fathers had been instructed and baptized by the Jesuits, were well disposed toward Catholicity. Protestant ministers made repeated attempts to gain their confidence, but were always coldly received." "What had they to do," asked the Indians, "with married preachers, men who wore no crucifix, and said no rosary? They wanted only the Black Robes to teach them how to serve God. They even went so far as to appeal to the President of the United States, asking that the married ministers might be recalled and Catholic priests sent in their place."

Pg 117 - I was given the place of honor in the chief's tent, who, surrounded by forty of his braves, addressed me in the following words: 'Black Robe, this is the happiest day of our lives, for to-day, for the first time, we see in our midst a man who is near to the Great Spirit. These are the principal warriors of my tribe. I have invited them to the feast I have prepared for you, that they may never forget the great day.""'

It seems strange that with the savages the fact of being a Catholic priest merited a triumphal reception for the lowly missionary, while in other times, and to men proud of their civilization, he would have been the object of suspicion. During the repast the great chief showered attentions on his guest, even to giving him a mouthful of his own food to chew, a refined usage among his tribe.

At night, after the missionary had retired and was about to fall asleep, he saw the chief who had received him with so much honor, enter his tent. Brandishing a knife that gleamed in the light of the torch, he said: "Black Robe, are you afraid?" The missionary, taking the chief's hand, placed it on his breast and replied: "See if my heart beats more rapidly than usual! Why should I be afraid? You have fed me with your own hands, and I am as safe in your tent as I would be in my father's house." Flattered by this reply, the Blackfoot renewed his professions of friendship; he had wished only to test the confidence of his guest.

Pg 86 - Protestant ministers tried to compete with the Catholic priests; but between a salaried official who distributed tracts to inquisitive members of the tribe, and the missionary, devoted body and soul to their interests, the Indians did not hesitate to make a choice." They refused the most alluring offers from Protestants and came from all directions to ask for a Black Robe to show them the way to heaven.

"After five years' residence with the Otoes, the Protestant minister has not yet baptized one person, and the greater part of the Protestant missionaries who overrun the Indian Territory make no better showing." (Letter of Father De Smet to Father Verhaegen, June, 1838.)

  • From another CI thread, here is an example of a good priest who dedicated himself 100% to the faithful, the late Fr. Carl Pulvemacher, OFM Capuchin R.,I.P
    https://www.cathinfo.com/sspx-resistance-news/wwfcd-what-would-fr-carl-do/msg540927/#msg540927

Fr. Carl was adored and loved by everyone, not because he was a great manager or sermonist, for he did not excel in either, he was loved because of his sincerity and poverty. Look at all his accomplishments. Fr. Carl learned to fly a plane as a passenger going to the missions in the Rockies. Fr. Carl learned from his mistakes.
