As a teenager I belonged to the Children of Mary. That was pre-Vatican II. We would gather together one Sunday per month, and sit in the first pews wearing a blue cloak (which I still possess) and a white veil. We dressed like that at home and walked to the church in that regalia in the days when being Catholic was publicly demonstrated..Previous to that we belonged to a girls sodality whose name I can't remember but we wore red cloaks and white veil. Can anyone remember?.For women there was the Sacred Heart sodality and for men the Holy Name sodality..Never heard of the Daughter's of Mary or the Daughters of Mary or Mary's Daughters.
I think I had the name wrong? The "Children of Mary" sounds correct. Thanks. There are certainly more folks, including teachers at St. Mary's school who know about this group. From it's noble origins, I think it was misdirected and later used at St. Mary's to spy and report to the Sisters on other children who were deemed to be wayward or at risk, i.e. bad girls, non locals, misfits,...etc.If you ever wonder about what contributed to the problems at St. Mary's school... the misuse of this organization was one of them. But its a small town, so Lord have Mercy on them.
