Title: We can now abbreviate +Zendejas instead of Fr. Zendejas
Post by: Matthew on May 14, 2017, 08:15:40 PM
For those who aren't aware, the little cross (+) before a last name is how bishops were respectfully referred to at the Winona Seminary. The rector (+Williamson) was often abbreviated +W -- including by +W himself!

So in case anyone was wondering, it's as respectful to type +Zendejas, +Faure, or +Fellay as it is to type out "Bishop Zendejas", "His Excellency Bishop Zendejas", etc. It just saves typing time. Just like typing "Fr." is just as respectful as "Father" or "Reverend Father".

I don't know where the custom came from, but to throw out a guess, perhaps the + represents the pectoral cross a bishop wears?

I will admit though, the + (plus) symbol certainly doesn't do any favors in the search engine department. People might search for "bishop zendejas" or "bp. zendejas" and Google will index those things, but all symbols are pretty much stripped out -- on both ends (Google's massive database/index of all websites, as well as the search text you type in)

That settles it. Google isn't Catholic!

Can we now use +Z instead?

Now that you mention it, I think we can.

I remember that over the past few years, several people tried to abbreviate him "Fr. Z", but others pointed out that "Fr. Z" usually stands for Fr. Zuhlsdorf of the "What Does That Prayer Really Say" pseudo-trad blog. There was also a "friend of the society" Traditional priest named Fr. Zigrang, who also happens to be based in Houston, TX and has said Mass in Texas for years.

But what is the most famous (living) bishop starting with Z?

+Zendejas, of course!

Especially since this is a TRADITIONAL CATHOLIC forum, the Z___ bishop in question would have to be traditional or at least conservative. I don't see a lot of competition there.
