  • Asking for a friend: is/are the priest(s) at the SSPX in Waunakee WI properly ordained/conditionally ordained? Any issues with the integrity of the sacraments offered there? Thanks!

To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

Where is Waunakee? There's an SSPX chapel there? and I'm from northern Illinois...

I know of Madison and Mukwonago (outside Milwaukee), but that's it.
And Madison was served by the Winona seminary professors. But that was back then.

  • Evidently, it's a township near Madison ... so that was probably just referred to as Madison chapel.  It would make sense for seminary to send priests there due to its proximity (2.5 hour drive).  Perhaps now it's whatever priests are stationed up in Winona still.

Father Charles Ward is currently the record up there in Winona (now Holy Angels Novitiate) and Father Kenneth Dean is the Master of Novices.  So my guess is that one or the other or both rotate over to Madison / Waunakee.

Both are from the pre-neo-SSPX era.  Father Charles Ward had already been ordained when I was going to the mission chapel in Chicago (starting about 1988) and Father Kenneth Dean was a professor at Winona during the latter part of when I was there.  Both certainly valid (no Conciliar ordination shenanigans) and both solid priests ... at least back when I knew them 30-33 years ago.

  • It is so bizarre to think that in 2023 one is not having to inquire about the validity of Orders for priests serving at SSPX Mass sites. One would have thought that after the Stark Case in the early 1980s this would never have to be revisited.

  • It should be Fr. Dwyer. Valid sspx ordained in Winona about 5 or 7 years ago.

Valid? Sure. But validity isn't everything. What about Traditional and quality of Traditional training?

Do you want a priest who is going to FIGHT Vatican II and the Conciliar Church, or one who is aligned with it and defending it all the time? Do you want a priest who is afraid to condemn Vatican II too much, or *gasp* treat it as a "super heresy" as Bp. Fellay quipped?

You can't fight the devil enough, you can't say enough good things about the Blessed Virgin Mary, and YOU CAN'T EXCORIATE VATICAN II TOO MUCH. You can't criticize it too much or say enough bad things about it.

As soon as you start going down the "Oh, 90% of Vatican II was actually OK" path, IT'S OVER. Put a fork in it, it's done.

    .

He said that?! Well, I believe the precise term is "synthesis of all heresies". I don't think there is a huge difference between the two.

The OP was about confirming a valid ordination. I simply responded to the inquiry. I agree formation is important but validity was what was being discussed.

Thank you Comrade. The inquiry is for someone who is away from the sacraments entirely. Any port in the storm will do, as long as it qualifies as a port :)

  • Fr Dean is the regular priest there, although we just went for the baptism of our granddaughter and it was Fr Ward filling in.

Oh, I didn't catch that detail.

I wasn't rebutting you then, just adding something to the discussion. I personally think validity is not the be-all-end-all, but the training of the priest as well. A Tridentine Mass needs a Tridentine Priest.

That would make sense, as the Holy Angels Novitiate (formerly STAS) is about a 2.5-hour drive away.  I've always thought highly of Father Ward.  He was the first SSPX priest who recommended (in the Confessional at the little hotel mission that used to be SSPX in Chicago) that I try a vocation at STAS.  He didn't know that I was intent upon doing exactly that.  I ran into him again years later when I was at Regina Caeli house in Kansas City, where I was serving a probation, for having become a sedevacantist, before returning to STAS for a second time.  Father Dean seemed to be a good professor at STAS ... though I never had him for a class myself.

I'd feel 100% confident going to that chapel and wish they were closer to me.
