Interesting: This is dated Laetare Sunday, 2012 and it's being finally made
available Gaudete Sunday 2012.
So the lag time is Lent to Advent... pretty sad state of affairs!
Come on, members! Are we gonna have to wait till Lent again
before we can get a reliable translation from Spanish to English??
In California, it's hard to get a job in a position that deals with the general
public unless you're fluent in both Spanish and English.
There must be at least 50 CI members who could do this..........
Okay, I've taken this bull by the horns. I used multiple translators online
and did the best I could with my limited knowledge of Spanish, to put
together what seems to be the best readable blend of the various
machine generated texts. But it's still not as good as someone who
knows both languages could do. So if any member here is able, please
check through this and see: I have made it one or two sentence segments
so you can see the original text right there with the English below it.
And then you don't have to fudge around with long pages or two
windows. At the bottom is a page of Latin translator data that was
the result of my trying to translate the "Latin" sentence found at the
top of it. It appears the word "fit" does not belong, due to declension
error or verb tense or whatever. The translators say "datum" make
sense, however. I can only suspect that whoever wrote the piece may
have been inadequate in Latin comprehension, which, if it is true,
makes me wonder about their other adherence to Tradition. Latin is
not a simple language, but it does have a powerful and stabilizing
effect on the Roman Catholic Church. Anyway, whoever reads this
and knows what to make of the Latin, be my guest to comment....
PALABRAS DEL SUPERIOR GENERAL (en Cor Unum, nº 101, marzo 2012)
WORDS OF THE SUPERIOR GENERAL (in Cor Unum, #101, March, 2012)
Estimados miembros de la Fraternidad:
Dear members of the Fraternity:
As all of you already know, last autumn was marked by the question/issue of our relations with Rome, and in particular by two surprising facts:
The first one was the absence of evaluation on the
part of Rome on the doctrinal discussions conducted
over two years by the Congregation for the Doctrine
of the Faith.
The only thing that was reported to us was an
indirect and unofficial observation -- according
to which, these discussions have demonstrated that
the fraternity was not attacking any dogma. But
officially: nothing.
[Something doesn't sound right here: why would the
Fraternity be "attacking any dogma???" That's screwy!]
Not even a positive or negative word. As if these
discussions had not taken place, despite the fact
that we were invited to see Cardinal Levada for that.
In fact, in the prologue of the Preamble proposed
on 14 September, it is merely mentioned that the
discussions have reached their objective, which
was to exhibit and to clarify our positions -- which
is equivalent to establish only a status statement,
but nothing more.
In the same prologue, it makes mention of requests
and concerns of the Fraternity in relation to the
maintenance of the integrity of faith.
One might consider this to be an allusion in our favor.
But that's (quite) all.
The discussions ended, it is true, somewhat helter-skelter,
stumbling over the topic of the current Magisterium, over
its relation with Tradition, over its relation with the
teaching of the Church in times past (that is, longstanding
Magisterium) and over the 'evolution' of Tradition.
And so everything seems to indicate, that on the part of
the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, these
discussions really(indeed) have ended.
The second event is the proposal made by this same
Congregation: recognize the Fraternity [being] granted
a legal status of personal prelature -- on condition of
[our] signing an ambiguous text, which we discussed in
the last Cor Unum.
This is surprising, since the discussions have shown a
deep disagreement in almost all the issues [that have
been] raised.
For our part our experts have shown well the opposition
that exists between, on the one hand, the perennial
Church teaching, and on the other, the Council Vatican II
with its consequences.
On the part of Rome, the experts have strained in saying
that we are mistaken: that we unduly attribute the abuses
and errors (that they recognize) to the Council, when they
are due to other causes, because the Church can do
nothing wrong, and because it cannot teach(show) any
error [whatsoever].
We even were accused of being Protestants, because
we would have raised our own reason and judgment
(opinion) over the current Magisterium; because we
would choose in the past what we like to oppose the
current Magisterium, while it is this [upon] whom it is
incuмbent to make present the teachings of the past,
since it is also the next rule of the faith.
Our experts have answered that the deposit of the
faith, which was entrusted to the Church, does not have
any new growth, but only one homogeneous
development “in eodem sensu” [within the purpose
of the same sense].
The deposit [of the faith] was closed with the death of the
Apostles.
Nevertheless, there can be some progress when an
implicit truth is explained more explicitly, or is expressed
by a more precise formulation.
The subjective progress, that is to say, that of the
believers, is also valid, but it is more difficult to
delimit: in principle, an adult should know more
about his faith than [would] a child.
Both forms of progress have long been recognized,
since St. Vincent of Lerins, already spoke of them
in his Commonitorium.
And the limits were also released from that moment.
The Council Vatican I did the same. Vatican II for its
part, mixes these two forms of progress and uses very
vague terms that can be understood either in a
traditional way, or in a modern way. The progressives
have [both] used and abused it, extensively.
And so, we have received a proposal that was trying to
make us enter the system of the hermeneutic of continuity.
This affirms that the Council is and must be in perfect
harmony with the teaching of the Church through all times.
¡El Concilio Vaticano II! ¿Un concilio tradicional?
The Second Vatican Council! A traditional Council?
We have responded that indeed the Council, and the
entire Church, must be in full harmony with the teachings
of the past, with Tradition.
It is a fundamental principle of the Church. Nevertheless,
the reality of the facts contradicts the possibility of any
type of continuity.
The Latin is a problem here: *(see bottom of page)*
Did they mean to say, Contra factum non sit argumentum,
in which case it translates: Against deed not he is proof.
But it seems to me they were trying to render this in Latin:
Against a fact there cannot be any argument. That comes
up as: Contra hoc argumentum non potest.
Or, Against a fact there can be no argument, comes up as:
Contra factum non datur argumentum.
How is such a thing possible? It's a mystery! In fact, does this
not contradict the promise of divine assistance given by our
Lord to his Church?
Apparently, yes, and there is a great mystery whose
possibility we tried to explain by means of distinctions
and definitions, but recognizing that the same reality of
the crisis is in itself a great mystery allowed by God.
For the first time on the 1st of December, and for the
second time on January 12, we communicate[d] to Rome
the impossibility in which we find ourselves: in signing
a docuмent that contains such ambiguities.
In order not to cut all the contacts, we have proposed an
alternative, inspired by a thought that Archbishop Lefebvre
wrote to Cardinal Gagnon in 1987: we accept to be
recognized just AS WE ARE.
It is important not to leave [having these] relations, and
[to] keep the door open, even if nothing allows us to think
that the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith would
agree to address, so far, such a view.
We have just received a response to our proposal, from the
Congregation on March 16.
It is a question of a letter which content is hard and
presents itself as an ultimatum and, for assumption, it
is a rejection of our text.
If we maintain our position, in one month we are going to
be declared schismatic, because in fact we would deny the
current Magisterium.
However the discussion that followed the delivery of the
letter allowed us to see the demands of the Congregation
of the Faith a little more clear[ly].
To understand well what's the direction we [are taking] in
this new situation, we think it's a good idea [for us] to
exhibit some considerations and clarifications:
Our beginning position: the faith first and first of all; we
want to remain Catholic and for it to maintain him(her, you)
the Catholic over everything. [Is this deliberately vague??]
The Church's [current] situation can compel us to take
measures of prudence related and relevant to the specific
situation.
The General Chapter of 2006 expressed(emitted) a line
(figure) of very clear action with regard to our situation
with Rome.
We give priority to the faith, without searching on our
side for a practical solution BEFORE solving the doctrinal
question.
There is no question here of a principle, but of a line of
conduct which should govern our concrete actions. We
are here facing a reasoning in which the major premise is
the affirmation of the principle of the primacy of faith, to
remain Catholics.
The minor premise is an historical observation on the
current situation of the Church; and the practical
conclusion is inspired by the virtue of prudence which
regulates human behavior; nothing [that] seek[s an]
agreement to the detriment of the faith.
In 2006, the heresies keep [kept] on arising, the same
authorities spread the modern and modernist [unclean]
spirit of Vatican II and impose[d] it on all like a road
[steam] roller (minor premise).
It is impossible to come to a practical agreement unless
the authorities convert; otherwise we would be squashed,
torn to pieces, destroyed or subjected to pressures so
strong that we could not resist (conclusion).
If the minor premise would change, that is to say, if
there was a change in the situation of the Church as
regards Tradition, this might lead to a corresponding
change in the conclusion: without our principles
having changed in anything! As Providence is
expressed through the reality of the facts, to know his
will, we must continue to follow with attention the
reality of the Church, [and to] observe, [and] examine
what happens [next].
However, there is no doubt that since 2006, we are
[have been] witnessing a development in the Church,
to a significant change -- and very interesting, although
not very visible.
However, this evolution, aided by the measures,
although shy, carried out by the Sovereign Pontiff
in regard to the internal life of the Church, it is also
offset by a large part of the hierarchy that wants
nothing to do with this.
On the other hand, the attempt [at] internal restoration
puts itself "under a bushel basket" with the [consistant]
affirmation of the importance of Vatican II and [its] reforms.
[rowsofvoices9 would heartily disagree: "Vat.II had no
reforms!"]
In particular the ones [the internal measures?] that
have to do with the life of the Church ad extra*;
its relations with the world, with the other religions
and with the States.
*ad extra in Latin means approaching beyond, or
for the purpose of outside, or toward the beginning
limits of the other side. Ad extremum = to the very end.
Estamos asistiendo a un doble movimiento opuesto y desigual:
We are witnessing a double movement, opposite and
uneven/unequal:
The hierarchy, composed of the people that made the
Council ([a] generation today nearly extinct) and those
who have applied the Council, who had been moved
from the Church before the Council - traditional, but
already marked in part, by the appetite of the news - to
the Conciliar or pos[t]-Conciliar Church, with mania
crazy by novelty, with the disaster that followed.
The majority does not want to turn back; perhaps some
of them admit that there were abuses, etc., even a crisis,
but the cause [they] will never be able to be [put] in the
Council.
[Hey, sounds just like rowsofvoices9 - maybe he wrote it!]
On the other hand, subsequent generations have another
look on the State of the Church. They do not have that
visceral emotional bond with a Council which they
themselves have not known.
And they know [even] much less the pre-Conciliar
[reality or Church]. Some [of these people] in the midst
of these generations, are more numerous than is thought,
are even unaware that previously [we] had another rite.
What they see is a very sad decadence and very
little [that is] uplifting, thus experiencing a frustration
and a profound disappointment: the monasteries are
closed, the lack of vocations is felt everywhere, the
churches are empty.
[Sounds like what the SSPX is heading toward!!]
Not having received a good and sound doctrine, they
do not really know what they have lost, but when they
realize [it], a bit [in] thanks to contact with Tradition,
then [they] experience a great bitterness, [they] feel
betrayed, deprived of this immense treasure.
This movement is growing, it is obvious, a little at
a time throughout the world, especially among the
young priests and seminarians. It escapes [from them]
to the hierarchy - in part - which is stifle[d in] this
desire since its inception, this trend of restoration
of the Church.
[Is he referring to the Reform of the Reform movement?]
The few acts of Benedicto XVI in this regard/sense,
acts ad intra* affecting the liturgy, affecting
discipline, affecting morality are so important,
although its application leaves still that to wish.
*ad intra (Latin) = towards inside, until fewer than,
up to within, almost under.
We note, however, some of these elements even
between the young bishops, some of whom clearly
expressed to us their sympathies, but discreetly, or
even a fund(depth) agreement: "Take courage,
persevere, remain as you are, you are our hope ... !"
are no longer rare(strange) words in the episcopal
mouths that we are.
[Sorry, I need some help with that one!]
It is perhaps in Rome where these things are more gross!
We now have friendly contacts in the most important
dicasteries, also among those closest to the Pope!
Our perception of the situation is such that we
believe that the efforts of the aging hierarchy may
not be able any more to stop this movement that
was born which [the aging hierarchy] wants and
expects [if] even vaguely - the restoration of the
Church. Although we must not exclude the return
of a "Julian the Apostate", I do not believe that this
movement could be stopped.
If this is true, and i'm sure [it is], that requires of us a
new position in relation to the official Church. It is
clear that we need to support with all our strength in
this movement, possibly [even] to guide it, illuminate it.
This is precisely what many expect from the Fraternity.
It is in this context that we wonder about the recognition
of the Fraternity by the official Church. It is not a question
for us of asking for an identity card that we already have!
Neither is it a false complex, nor a "feeling of ghetto".
It is a question of a supernatural look on the Church
and the fact that she remains in the hands of Our
Lord Jesus Christ, still disfigured by its enemies. Our
new friends in Rome affirm that the impact of such
recognition would be extremely powerful for the
whole Church, like a confirmation of the importance
of Tradition for the Church. Nevertheless, such a
concrete achievement needs two absolutely
necessary points to assure our survival:
The first one is not to be prompted to the Fraternity
for concessions affecting the faith and what emanates
from it (the liturgy, the sacraments, morality, discipline).
The second one is that there is granted to the
Fraternity a true freedom and autonomy of action,
and that they allow you to live and to develop
in particular/specifically.
Humanly speaking, we have to doubt that the current
hierarchy is ready. But a series of very serious
indications compel us to think that, however, Pope
Benedict XVI would be ready for it.
The Church today is so weakened, the hierarchy [so]
divided, that we believe no longer that the action of
the road roller is possible. On the contrary, we are
gaining ground every day, in our current situation,
although the fraternity is still accused by many of
being schismatic.
It should be clear that it is completely excluded from
us that we [would] bring in a movement of subjugation
which would be to swallow the poison, and in yielding
our positions. There is absolutely no question of that.
Nevertheless, if we bear in mind the lessons of the
history of the Church, we see that the saints, with a
great strength of soul and of faith made a return to
souls lost in situations of serious crises, using of a
big compassion (and steadfastness) without falling
into an excessive reprehensible rigidity, as it was
for example the case of the Donatists, or of Tertulian.
And, without refusing, nevertheless, to work with
and in the Church, in spite of the Arian occupation
(for example) and of numerous bishops who were
still in their functions. Let's extract the lessons of
this history, considering the admirable balance of
our venerated founding Monsignor Lefebvre; a
balance of strength, of faith and of charity, of
missionary zeal and love for the Church.
There will be the concrete circuмstances which show
us when it will be the time to 'take the plunge' into the
official Church. Today, despite the Roman approach of
September 14 and due to conditions imposed, this still
seems impossible to us. When God wants it, this time
will come. We cannot exclude either, because the Pope
seems to put all [his] weight in this matter, that this
situation knows a sudden ending. As for us, let's remain
very loyal and eager to please only God. This is
enough, He will no doubt lead our steps, as He has done
since the foundation of the Fraternity.
We entrust and consecrate our beloved Fraternity to the
Immaculate Heart of Mary, terrible as an army formed in
battle. That like a good Mother, she deigns protect us,
guide us to victory in the midst of so many dangers:
his triumph over the earth and our salvation in heaven!
Wishing you an end of Lent and Paschal time full houses
of thank you, I bless you,
+ Bernard Fellay, Laetare Sunday, March 18th 2012.
