The earlier post made me wonder - just how many traditional third orders are there? In the NO I've heard of Dominican, Carmelite, and Franciscan, are there corresponding traditional third orders?

Yes, the Order of Penance of St. Francis is a Traditional Third Order, we (in Canada) are under the Traditional Capuchins in Morgon France, our Superior of the Third Order Secular is Fr. Francois-Marie at the Novitiate convent in Arenque France, unlike the New Third Order of St. Francis in the U.S. (found at the SSPX U.S.A. website) which as stated by Fr. Emily is under the SSPX with "input from" the Capuchins in Morgon France. :reporter:

Do both use the same Rule?

Yes they do. And Fr. Emily was appointed in the US not long ago. Although the N.O. rule of the Secular Franciscan Order is quite different.

There is also the Order of Penance of Saint Dominic, also called the Dominican Third Order of the priory of la Haye-aux-Bonshommes in Avrille, France. We have Declarations, Rule and Constitution established in 1991 and based on the updated rule of 1923. We are directly under the Father Director of the Couvent de la Haye-aux-Bonhommes.

We are not so formally organized over here in the USA as the Franciscan Third Order looks to be, but we do exist.

There is a traditonal Discalced Carmelite Third Order and has been for many years. The spiritual chaplains are priests from the Society of St. Pius X but we come under the Traditonal Discalced Carmelites at Sacre Coeur Carmel Quievrain Belgium.

There are tertiaries in Australia, Canada, Denmark, England, Fiji, Ireland, Philippines, New Zealand, Netherlands, South Africa and the USA.
