  • The head of the traditionalist Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) has denounced a proposal by Cardinal Walter Kasper for allowing the reception of Communion by Catholics who are divorced and remarried.

Bishop Bernard Fellay, the superior general of the SSPX, said that Cardinal Kasper’s suggestions could give a “disastrous spirit” to the October meeting of the Synod of Bishops. Citing “gross errors” in the cardinal’s presentation, the breakaway bishop—who remains under suspension by the Vatican—said that the cardinal’s approach “scoffs at the explicit teaching of Christ on the indissolubility of marriage and is not merciful but insulting to God.”

Bishop Fellay observed that the Synod will discuss marriage at a time when many Catholics are fighting against the adoption of new laws and policies that undermine marriage. “It is simply scandalous,” he said, “to see these same laws surreptitiously supported by churchmen who wish to align Catholic doctrine and morality with the morals of a de-Christianized society, instead of seeking to convert souls.”

I think Bishop Fellay may be right in this instance.

"Even a stopped clock..."  Is that what you're saying?

It would be nice to get excited that +F is sounding traditional for a change.

But don't be too hasty!  He could take the opposite tack tomorrow, or next week, or next month.  And I wouldn't be too surprised if he does so, because in principle, he has already shown he has leanings in that direction by being open to liberalism, such as his abominable AFD of 2 years ago, which he hid in secrecy for an entire year, during which time he specifically gave speeches and wrote words that would lead the listener or reader to think that he held views OPPOSITE to those he was hiding in his secret AFD all the while.  So he could be hiding the opposite opinion about Communion to re-married and/or divorced Catholics in secrecy right now, to be consistent with hiding things in secrecy.

Anyway, this topic is a lot bigger than merely the SSPX or its reed-shaken-by-the-wind leadership.

There is a new thread in the Crisis forum dedicated to this larger, universal topic.
