CathMomof7,
This is not new!  Back in the late nineties, I confessed to a SSPX priest that I had not observed Lent as I should have. He told me that's okay. The Church now said to fast and abstain on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Through the years, I got the idea that the SSPX still ENCOURAGES us to observe Lent in the traditional way.

What's the issue here? Seems like you've answered your own worries. The fast and abstinence on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the minimum requirements under pain of mortal sin. Additional penances are encouraged, as you rightly noted.

I did not hear this personally.  I did speak to more than one person to clarify this.  Take it as you will.  So I will call this second hand information that is verifiable fact.

Recently at two chapels in this area it was reported from the pulpit that the only two days in Lent that require fasting are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

I was there. He did not even mention the Fridays of Lent, just Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

Ordained in 2010.

For further clarification:   Did he even recommend sticking to the traditional fast?  Was there any mention or indication that the faithful ought to do more than just that bare minimum requirement?

Doesn't even the Novus Ordo require abstinence on Fridays during Lent?  He didn't even mention that?

Abstinence, but not fasting.

Trento,
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I thought the SSPX was practicing the faith as it was before Vatican II. I know it has been said it's a disciplinary matter and the bishops can change it. But in the overall picture, along with so much of Vatican II, it's changing the practice of the faith and in turn, what one believes about the faith.

Yes, that is why I said abstinence.  It sounded like the priest only mentioned fasting on Ash Wednesday & Good Friday, but not that the Novus Ordo rules require abstinence on Fridays during Lent also. (  :confused1: asking the person who heard the sermon)  Because even if he's only going to mention the Novus Ordo rules, you'd think he'd at least mention that as well.

At my SSPX chapel, the priest told us the minimum Novus Ordo requirements which we must follow under pain of sin, and then he told us of the traditional rules which he urged us to follow even though it is not binding under pain of sin.

That is what I've always heard the SSPX priests do.  It sounded like this priest in question skipped the latter part, and maybe didn't even bother to mention Friday abstinence during Lent.

Last year, Father Hewko explained Lent something like this:

At Vatican II, they changed everything.  They decided the rules were too hard for simple Catholics.  They threw them out the window, even when the people didn't want that!  Catholics all over the world embraced the Lenten fast!  But what did the Pope and the Bishops do?  They said "It's too hard!  We will be different from the Protestants!  Let's not do that anymore!"

But we, dear faithful Catholics, we don't believe that.  We don't consider that.  We embrace our Lenten fast, just like Our Lord in the desert!  We fast, we do our penances, we offer works of charity.  We prepare ourselves for that Great Feast Day of the Resurrection.

This is why our family remained in our SSPX chapel.  I miss Fr. Hewko!

This:  the minimum requirement is fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.  That is what we must do: is Novus Ordo hogwash.

In this day and age of gastric bypass surgery and stomach bands, one would think Catholics would embrace the Lenten fast, if nothing other than to lose the 10 or 15 pounds they gained over the Holidays.
