  • I’ll probably take some heat for revealing this, but Dr. White’s health is extremely precarious at the moment (and has been for a couple years now).

But worse than his health issues, is the pain of a great thinker and writer believing -MISTAKENLY- he has no more to offer.  This misperceived uselessness on his part needs only the proper venue to reawaken the love of teaching, if one would step forward to give him a little nudge.

Bishop Williamson emailed me about conducting a series of recorded interviews on various natural and supernatural subjects, but n a very polite way, an intermediary declined the offer.  My suspicion is that perhaps the good Doctor has witnessed me brawling in the mud one too many times, and does not want his name to be associated with mine (just a guess on my part which, if true, is perfectly understandable).

The point of posting about this here, therefore, is to see if perhaps someone in Dr. White’s neck of the woods could take up this project, and perhaps he would receive a more favorable response from Dr. White.

All the great trads are dying or fading into obscurity, and this saddens me tremendously.  But I believe Dr. White still has his best work in front of him, if only the right man can persuade him.

Bishop Williamson reminds me that the swan’s song (ie., it’s final wailing) is its most beautiful, and the thought of Dr. White dying with his own song trapped inside is depressing.

There are some here in the Virginia area who perhaps could persuade Dr. White to write or interview, before...?

  • I am pretty far away, but I agree that your idea is a good one, Sean.

Who knows why the intermediary politely declined. Hopefully it's nothing insurmountable.

Given that Dr. White has X years to live (X being known to God alone), we are exactly X years before a great mind is lost to the world...

  • So, Dr. White has published and spoken a great deal, and there are lots of videos of his talks out there.  What are you hoping to get that he hasn't already covered in his lengthy career?

  • Perhaps he can have time to recant this:

While the Dimonds are a bit harsh and bitter, they're correct that this was a grave error.

Dr. White was asked what would happen to the atheist's soul PROVIDED HE REMAINED AN ATHEIST.  Catholic Answer:  he would go to hell.  Even the liberal ("Rewarder God") theorists would have to admit that an atheist can't be saved.  This is completely in line with Berogoglio's statement along the same lines.  This is no different than "Bishop" Barron's heretical answer to a very similar question (about whether a Jєω could be saved).

Dr. White by correctly answering the question according to teaching, may have rattled the unbelievers.  Instead he left them complacent in the possibility of not being damned even without converting.

This is a cop-out, to answer that we don't know what happens to any individual soul at their death.  That only means that it's possible that something might transpire between God and a soul in the final moments, but the question was one of principle, assuming nothing changes.  Those without supernatural faith or even natural faith (an atheist) CANNOT be saved.  That is Catholic dogma.  And Dr. White effectively denied Catholic dogma with his answer.  He did damage to the faith.  I think it's a stretch to assume that Dr. White was a formal heresy; he was obviously waffling because he didn't want to rub the atheist the wrong way ... as many people do when asked this question.

So perhaps an interview might give him the opportunity to correct this grave error and the damage he did to Catholic dogma with his answers.

  • I know what Dr. White was doing.  He was hemming and hawing about EENS (which Hitchens himself accused Dr. White of "repudiat[ing]") because he didn't want this listeners to think the Church is "judgmental" or "arrogant".  Oh, EENS, "well, what's REALLY meant by EENS is [insert meaningless formula]".  Hitchens actually cited in Latin "Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus".  But the impression one comes away with is a rejection of Catholic dogma.  And the best charity one can exercise to the non-Catholics is to tell them, charitably, that they cannot be saved in their current state ... and give them something to think about and to gnaw away at their consciences.  You explain about the supernatural state, that's it's now owed to anyone by nature, and that the Sacraments and the faith allow human beings to have the extra supernatural faculties to be able to see God as He is, etc.

"Christopher, I am sorry, but if you do not convert to the faith, you cannot be saved as an atheist.  I will pray for your conversion. [then explain the Church's actual teaching on the subject]"

  • Isn't Dr White the one who stated that heaven will be filled with mostly non-Catholics?
