SSPX St. Christophers Mission in Manhattan may close

  • The SSPX chapel in Manhattan called St. Christopher's Mission may close because we do not make enough money from the collection to cover expenses. The priest announced this at Mass yesterday. If this causes the faithful to be more generous and give more to the collection then the Mass will continue, but if we cannot or do not give more the chapel will close.

If the chapel does close there is another traditional chapel in Bayside New York called Our Lady of La Salette where they say the traditional Latin Mass. It is independent so they are not a part of the Novus Ordo.

  • How often do you have Mass right now?

You'd think they'd reduce the number of Masses before they'd close down the mission.

The one time I was present for a "step it up or we'll have to stop coming" sermon, it was at a location that only had Mass once per month.

As of now there is Mass every Sunday. The priest did not say we would have Mass less often, he said there would be no more Masses if collections do not increase. I am not aware of all of the details.

We have Mass in a hotel room. The rent is around 500 dollars for a few hours every Sunday. For Mass on most Sundays there are around 25 people so to make the rent we have to contribute around 20 dollars per person. Right now we are not making enough.

The nearest SSPX chapel if this one closes down is in North Jersey. You got some Latin Masses in the 5 boroughs (mostly Brooklyn), but they're ALL diocesan.

Are you sure that they are ALL diocesan? I thought Our Lady of La Salette in Queens was independent and not diocesan.

Nooo....don't go to that Bayside chapel! I'll pm you tomorrow. It is "independent" but it is very bizarre at least when I attended the one and only time many years ago.

If you have bad news about Our Lady of La Salette I will be glad to be informed about it. I don't know much about it.

If that chapel is a no go, I guess I will have to become a home aloner, go to the Ukranian Rite in Manhattan or find some one to drive me to the SSPV chapel or the SSPX chapel on long island.

Matto, if you're coming from Brooklyn or Queens, have a backup plan to go to the Bayside chapel. Manhattan/Bronx/Westchester County, I'd go to the one in NJ.

25 people is a hard number to sustain a mission.

Fr. Schell's Ventura mission got down to less than 10 people for about a year before they had to close.  They had Mass in the Ted Mayr Funeral Home chapel on Sunday afternoons.

Interesting, the "money theme" that is ?

It's being heard throughout the xSPX network nowadays.

What was +ABL's original operations model... the chapel collections had to cover expenses, plus a 60% margin ?

    Just joking.

The answer is:  +ABL's original mission was to bring the Holy Tridentine Mass to those who requested it.... all over the world.

  • Okay, I hear ya, Father Wegner is a German businessman... Every chapel has to carry their own weight and maybe, Manhattannites are a bunch of cheapos...

But wait a minute... why aren't they supporting their chapel?

Here these trads are, in the middle of "Heimi-town" as Jesse Jackson calls it and think of the exhilarating feeling coming out of a Tridentine Mass on Sunday?

Here you are, walkin down 47th street amongst all the Jєωs, caring for their diamond businesses...

Now, I'm thinkin (like Jesse) "Hey Mista Jєω!  You gots yo money and yo тαℓмυd, but you gots nuthin on me!"

I just received the Sacraments, Confession and the Holy Eucharist and I'm walking on a cloud.

So, what's wrong with the chapel ?

Could it be novus ordo-like sermons ?

On the West coast, there's an affluent trad lady who still attends the xSPX Masses asking,
"Why are we only getting Novus ordo sermons nowadays?"

And finally, there's the old Novus ordo prank, where they faithful put a note in the collection basket that says, " No dogma, No dollar"

Could that be the real root cause of the chapel's deterioration ?

Boy it must be a plush hotel! No chance of finding alternative venue. A funeral parlour on Sunday afternoon. How much do those cost?

  • Or Manhattan, which is one of the most expensive places on Earth. Shocked that they aren't getting charged twice or 3x that.

It is in midtown Manhattan which is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the country. I would hope that the coordinator and the priest would have looked at alternatives.

  • Incredulous' photo says a lot, but I did a search for "Midtown Manhattan, the largest central business district in the world and ranks among the most intensely used pieces of real estate in the world". (wiki)

Anyone good at digging catacombs? Just being facetious.
