Title: SSPX retirement village
Post by: Marlelar on May 23, 2016, 12:03:15 AM
I just received the SSPX mailing with a questionnaire about establishing a retirement village in Veneta, OR

Does anyone know if there already exists such a place that is associated with a traditional Church?  Or perhaps an area that retirees are going to?  My concern of course is the SSPX trajectory to a complete "sell out".

I got the same letter. One of the women who goes to my chapel plans on retiring there.

I wonder if it will be like an old folks FEMA camp ?

You know what I mean.

Sign away your life savings, go to the woods... and your relatives never see you again.

I think there is or was one existing in Canada called the Residence of the Precious Blood. From the SSPX site: "The Residence of the Precious Blood in Lévis serves as a retirement home for the elderly who want to benefit from a truly Catholic environment and prepare their souls well to meet God".

Yeah, great idea, but do they have pictures of Pope Francis hanging on the walls?

The envisioned village is in Oregon. Old people normally retire to warm places like Florida.

How do you keep it even "Catholic", let alone old SSPX (the retirees are not going to be new SSPX)?

Others in the USA have tried this before in just an apartment/condo/townhome complex, giving the trads a low price, only to have them move out later and make a big profit selling it to anyone in the world and eventually the place was like living in any other building.

Something like this might work if the SSPX rented  the housing  and only in Italy, Spain, France, where everyone is of a Catholic culture.

Another thing, the SSPX is changing, they've thrown out a lot of parishioners who disagreed with the changes, I would not trust them enough to move to a place just based on their promises.  If things are as Bp. Fellay's SSPX teaches now, that the Novus Ordo priests and bishops are valid. One only needs to find a reverent Novus Ordo mass nearby, no need to drive long distances, let alone move to Oregon. There's Catholic Church on practically every corner in the USA, no need to move just for that.

That's likely in Quebec, a Catholic culture, and likely the SSPX owns the property and rents to the faithful. It would work under those two conditions. The USA is not a Catholic culture and the SSPX is talking about selling lots and and the faithful building their homes. It is a land development business.

The whole (glossy, I might add) sales pitch sounds like an attempt to create a Catholic Utopia destination.

This will not work, for the simple reason that the elderly decline rapidly every time they move. And most elderly want to stay where they have family members, not isolate themselves by moving alone to an odd location.

What would be better, (and probably much less expensive than Wegner's "Sarto" Utopia) is for the SSPX to purchase inexpensive apartment buildings near their larger Mass centers that could be configured into an assisted living facility with appropriate levels of escalating care, and a shuttle that took the residents to daily Mass. That would be very useful.

Also, does the SSPX realize the irony of selecting a location for old people in one of the four states in the USA that have legalized euthanasia?
