They can keep it. The last car I owned was a Mercedes-Benz. It cost me a fortune to keep
it on the road. Even though, I got over 30 mpg, the repairs just to keep it running were
outrageous.

My old boss had nothing but MBs - excellent cars, really, but one oil change would set you back like $500 lol

Looks like someone donated the car to them and they just are getting whatever they can for it, the link says:

This is interesting, but I'm puzzled. Why would an oil change for a Mercedes cost more than an oil change for a Honda or a Chevy? Or for a Saab or a Volvo for that matter (I know folks who are happy owners of these cars)?

It does not.  A full service costs $500 but that is a full service not just an oil change.

People take the car to Mercedes main dealers because either they have too much money and don't mind wasting it, or they are forced to by a lease agreement, or they are idiots who think the stamps in the log book will retain a residual value higher than the difference in serving costs.

Best way to run a car like this is find a mechanic who works for Mercedes and bring it to his house over the weekend. He has all the diagnostic tools, knows how to repair every aspect of the car, knows the faults it is susceptible to, and will usually work at about 1/4 to 1/3 of the Main dealer's hourly labour rate for cash in hand.

9 times out of ten the moonlighting mechanic can take the service book into Merc and have it stamped as well.

The tickets are 100 each.  Or 6 for the price of an "oil change".

Count me in.  If it's a relatively-new car, it'll have a decent warranty.

Perhaps the Resistance can steal this idea.  Auction off a Kia Rio.  Either that or one of those cargo vans that seat 12 that many Traditional Catholic families drive.

How could they sell enough tickets?

Winning is not much use if the vehicle is half a world away.

I wonder if this formerly had the licence tag SCV 1 and was delivered by Cardinal Brandmueller in a gesture of "fraternal solidarity" now that Papa Francesco uses a clapped out Renault ?

It's a win-win, that's how I see it.  You get a chance to fund a holy cause and you might get a great car in the process.

Now, how does one get a ticket without paying?

I am not being facetious or sarcastic, but serious. How can I "participate" and still get a ticket without donating or purchasing anything??

Found it:

Manual Entry.
To enter without donating, mail one self-addressed postage paid envelope to STAS 21077 Quarry Hill Rd Winona, MN 55987, (except Vermont and Washington residents are not required to affix return postage). Limit one entry ticket request per person per day. Request must  be typed, signed, and dated. One entry ticket will be returned in the envelope provided to each mail-in request that complies with these requirements. All requests for entry ticket must be postmarked no later than 11:59 PM EST June 1, 2015 and received no later than June 10, 2015. Mail for Gratuitous Entry Method to any other address will be disqualified and destroyed.

I will be sending in one request for myself and one for my wife every single day until the entry deadline.  I should have several hundred tickets in there by then at the cost of about $1 per ticket (for postage to and from).

In case you didn't get it and are preparing the down-thumb, this was a joke.  I have no use for a Mercedes.

That is because they are not licenced to run a lottery.  They have to provide a free route to enter by law.

Car Gurus (http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/l-Used-2014-Mercedes-Benz-C-Class-C300-Sport-4MATIC-t52692) shows they're going for about $32k. Kind of surprising, I thought it would be worth a lot more.

Oh, and I saw where an oil change from a dealer is only $230 for one of these, not $500.

You'd pay taxes on the prize and then be subjected to very high maintenance costs.  Not worth it.  If I want to make a donation, I'll just make a straight donation.  Plus, I'd be embarrassed to drive around in that car when many large Catholic families are struggling to make ends meet, and lots of children around the world are starving to death as we speak.

That's the car that was donated to them, so what were they supposed to do then?  Say, "No thanks"!?  That'd be rude.  Keep it?  Can't you just hear the people complaining about the Rector of the SSPX seminary driving a Mercede-Benz?!

Their best and only option is exactly what they are doing:  raffling it off, hoping people will ask their non-traditional yuppy friends with their 2 kids to buy a ticket, giving others an opportunity to support a good cause while bringing in "outside" money for a change.

The owner could have sold it and given the $33,000 to the Seminary, but a well-run raffle can make 10 times that amount.   They'd be stupid not to hold a raffle.

I still don't know where you're getting that it was donated, but a vehicle is not a one-of-a-kind item. You can buy one and hold a raffle any day of the week. One of the local churches here does it once a year.

I don't think they'd be "stupid" to sell this particular car if they thought it might not be the best raffle item for their target audience.

Why not buy a new family sized van, at a discount and then auction that if raffles return a profit.

I think at 100 dollars per ticket, not that many people will be buying a ticket.  333 tickets sold?  Perhaps.

More SSPX laity would want a large multi-seater van and older people who wanted to support the SSPX and larger families could buy the ticket on behalf of a large family in the parish.
