  • I was married in October of last year.  I am considering attending the Matrimony Retreat at Our Lady of Sorrows in Phoenix.

I have talked to many people that have really enjoyed the Ignatian Retreats put on by the SSPX, but have yet to find anyone that has been on a Matrimony Retreat.

If anyone has been on one, please share your experience.

  • If it is anything like the New Order's, Marriage Encounter, don't go.  IF, I say.  We were invited to a New Order Marriage Encounter and sad to say we went.  We couldn't wait to come home.  That was early 1990's.  It was so bad!   But be careful.  Pius X have had new priest and some from the New Order.

Check out their plans.  If there is no confessions open to couples, don't go.  That to me is #1 and Mass every day.

    Puhlease.

We are talking about the SSPX here, so your advice is absurd.

It is NOTHING like anything in the Nervous Disordo.

I've been to the Matrimony Retreat, way back in the day, and it was awesome!

In fact, Fr. Pfeiffer and Fr. Leith were our retreat masters, and it was an excellent experience.

I even still have the notes I took.

I'm wondering if you've been reading any of the posts on this forum about how the SSPX has been changing in recent years.

The advice is certainly not absurd.  You attended such a retreat "back in the day" and you report that "it was awesome".  That's good.  But what have they changed over the past two or three years in order to make it more to the liking of Conciliar authorities?

Honestly, it takes a lot of gall to criticize someone on this forum just asking if something the SSPX is doing today might have been corrupted with their newer orientation.  Take off the blindfold.

Thank you for your input.  I can't imagine it would be like the "Marriage Encounter."  I will ask for some details when I call.

Songbird gave an INCREDIBLY bad piece of advice - "don't go."

To suspect that one could compare an SSPX retreat to anything the Nervous Disordo puts on is ABSURD.

The SSPX may have changed in the last 15 years, but it has NOT changed so much that one should not recommend going on their matrimony retreat.

    That's my point.

In fact, I am certain Fr. Robinson would give a very good matrimony retreat.

Just don't talk to him about anything other than marriage ...

Still I have great confidence in the work of the SSPX and its dedicated superiors. Everywhere I have been, it the best of Catholic faithful I have been blessed to meet and work with. May the Good Lord continue to bless His holy work of Restoration through the SSPX.

It is unfair to besmirch him because he is optimistic. I like Fr. Robinson very much, he is a very good priest. He was a class ahead of Fr. Pfeiffer at seminary and he does not have an overly negative view of him in the Resistance. So, I would grant him a little more charity.

A good friend of mine went on retreat at OLOS last year with Fr Robinson (he's also a "local" priest here now as he comes to SA regularly). My recommendation was based on more than just the quote.

However, while I know it to be the case with Fr Robinson, I would give the same recommendation to anyone considering any SSPX retreat.

  • Maybe they need a "Matrimony Retreat"  at Immaculate Conception Church in Post Falls.  In the relatively short almost 10 year period we spent there, we know of at least three ICC families which broke up.

    Yikes.
