SSPX Conference on the Papacy: Any Impressions?

  • SSPX and The Angelus put out a lot of promotion material for their October 2012 conference, whose theme was "The Papacy."

The only thing I saw about it was the controversy on different boards about the Remnant interview with K**h. The attendance looked a lot smaller than last year's conference, which is not surprising.

Did anyone here go, and if so can they give us their impressions? Did attendees discuss the pros and cons deal among themselves or was it a taboo topic?

    Canute,

That is an internet rumour. You mustn't believe the attendance was down on last year's conference. Pay no heed to those rumour mongers.

  • We spoke with someone who went to the conference, and yes attendance was down.  They rented a smaller room - so unless you realized it, it appeared the same.  The deal wasn't spoken about and we were told the conference was somewhat dull.

Also, I've been informed that Bishop Fellay was so humble, so kind... how could anyone think ill of him or what he says.  I'd almost think it was snowing in July.

It's what he does that scares me.

  • Humble... while surrendering the remnant of Catholic tradition to newChurch.

Sanctity of life will be held in derision even by those who outwardly profess it, for in those days Our Lord Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor but a destroyer."  St. Francis of Assisi

    John Grace,

I didn't hear this from someone.

I was just cleaning out my inbox today and noticed a promo with the photo of last year's conference. When I looked on the sSPX site for news about what went on at this year's conference, from the photos it looked like fewer people attended and that the room was smaller.

Maybe someone who was at both conferences would have a better idea of whether or not this was true.

  • From the outside it appears the conference was set up on the Papacy with a deal predicted to happen. The conference could then address the limits of papal power and set up a framework for operating under Conciliar oversight/ structures.

It looks like that was foiled and then they had to have a conference on the papacy anyway. With most of the Society faithful on all sides disgusted with the papacy at the time of the conference, it is not surprising if turn out was low.

Who wants to go to a conference on the papacy anyway?

It's not like this is advanced subject matter for trads, and therefore worthy of hopping on a plane for.

I thought the theme was very boring, and like you, immediately suspected a political motive in the selection of the topic.

I totally agree. Don't know if anyone noticed, but it was rather interesting that the promotional ads before the conference showed a picture of Pope Benedict XVI in the Remnant ads, but a picture of Pope St. Pius X in the CFN ads. Interesting commentary on the leanings of the readership.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, I thought the conference was in a totally different hotel this year than the first 2 years. We went to the first 2 conferences, but were not interested in this year's topic, even before the strange turn in the Rome talks.

They also threw the attendees a curve ball when they made a change mid-stream and decided to start the conference with an 8am Mass on FRIDAY morning some weeks after many had already pre-registered. Hence those people had not made reservations for Thursday night, since they had anticipated the conference starting around 4pm Friday with registration, like it did for the past 2 conferences, and still considered Friday a "travel" day.
When they got wind of this and tried to add a night, they were told the hotel was full for Thursday night. If you had plane reservations for Friday, you were out of luck.

  • They're giving a standing ovation because they want a "new springtime" in the SSPX.

A lot of trads are more interested in the social group than in the religion itself.  They never really believed the doctrinal positions of the SSPX, they just didn't like the leftism of the NO.  They are at a fundamental level liberal-minded people.

So now they have their conservative Republican-style "Tradition" that gets to claim Benedict XVI as their own and lets them talk civilly with the other pro-Zionist Republicans.

St. Mary's is becoming the neotrad Catholic Disneyland and the new Seminary in Virginia will be the neotrad Disney World.

Maybe it will come out in time for Christmas.

In retrospect, your theory makes a lot of sense. I think Bp. Fellay and just about everyone else expected the deal to be long concluded by October -- so a conference on the papacy could serve the double purpose of, on one hand, being a "victory lap" for promoting the deal to skeptical traditional Catholics and, on the other, of being a public demonstration of loyalty to Benedict XVI.

The collapse of the deal (or putting it on ice for the moment) probably took the wind out of everyone's sails and reduced them to repeating the same old, same old SSPX positions on the pope.

That way, Sigismund, The Angelus wouldn't need to do a new CD at all!

  • One of my family members came back from the conference all fired up on how Bishop Fellay and Co. have and hold the salvation of our souls at the highest level, all the while being bamboozled by Bishop Fellay's blazing 10,000 watt smile and extremely cunning tongue.

Doesn't even realize if +Fellay has cares about our salvation then what is he doing trying to make a deal with modernist rome who don't care about the supreme law of the church.

It should be obvious that the conference on the Papacy is just a prepatory phase for the eventual move of the society into modernist Rome. Bishop "I was deceived" Fellay is now in the process of deceiving the laity and his priest.

It should be more obvious since he brought his Kosher counsel with him, who and what is behind all of this.

+Fellay is going to wait until the waters calm down before makes the final move to Modernist Rome.
