  • Hey, I'm fairly new to the traditional movement but I have a question. At a local SSPX chapel, none of the priests wear a biretta. For TLM, I've been to FSSP, CMRI and an independent church and all priests wore the biretta. As this seems to be part of tradition, I would have thought SSPX would wear them to. Is this normal for SSPX? Why wouldn't they wear them or am I making a bigger deal than it is? :)

  • I'm in your area and have wondered the same. Many other SSPX chapels wear birettas but at IC they don't.

Because we owe a debt we cannot pay.

  • In my years with the Society, some priests wear them and some don't. Its optional. In my years in Winona, it wasn't popular as I remember, nor was the fringed sash.
Conversely, in my years with the FSSP, the biretta was worn by most priests at the beginning and end of mass, and occasionally during the sermon. My understanding is that it depends on preference

  • I was told by a Society priest that it is optional.  Archbishop Lefebvre didn't require his priests to wear one because he wanted them to keep a missionary spirit by wearing just a simple cassock.
