I asked the first question of His Excellency to start the Q&A session after the conference.

The subject was internet anonymity.

Many of you know that I have openly opposed revealing identities as a tactical mistake that helps the enemy eliminate opposition.

That much is still true.

Nevertheless, His Lordship said that anonymity hurt credibility;

That it is frequently the cause of saying things we would not say had our identities been ascertainable;

That anonymity was less manly;

That the early martyrs, knowing they had truth on their side, stated it openly and let the chips fall where they may; that they had a willingness to be martyrs to stand openly by their principles.

Because on the one hand I see some of these characteristics in myself (i.e., flying off the handle too easily, and responding in overly harsh ways);

And on the other hand desire to imitate the moral courage of the martyrs;

And also because I admire Bishop Williamson and am shamed that he might think my anonymity "less manly;"

I have for these reasons decided to forego the use of my Pseudonym "Seraphim."

If it is possible, Matthew, to change all my previous posts into my given name, I would be much obliged.

I also need to know how to change my Username from "Seraphim" to my given name going forward.

Only Matthew can change your username.

I can understand what +Williamson is saying, I guess, but regardless of how "unmanly" it may be, I'm going to keep using a pseudonym. I have my reasons. :)

How incredibly brave, Sean. I wish I were, but then, I admit that I am very, very "unmanly". I understand as well that many good men have strong reasons for attempting to maintain their anonymity. God bless and keep you from ugly retaliation by wicked jackboots. :applause:

Having lived as a kid during the revolution, I remember too many people who were unnecessarily persecuted because they were not prudent enough to remain "underground".

If this forum or any other internet avenue were officially representing the Church, then yes, using your real name would certainly be mandatory.

If we were an ordained member of the clergy then yes, perhaps it would be proper to use our real name or at least our official title, ie Fr. or Brother or etc., but these days the entire world has access to our personal information and if they can figure out how to get to it because you gave them your real name then you can be hurt many different ways - then you're just asking for trouble - when you ask for trouble, expect to get it is my opinion.

There is no good reason to expose your real name on internet forums to the entire world imo, but there are many good reasons not to. Credibility is not based on who we are but what we do, or in this case, what we post.

For what it's worth, I still don't know Sean from Adam. He is just as anonymous to me as saraphim was. In fact, I knew exactly who seraphim was on this forum. Perhaps I'll remember that Sean is serephim in the future.

I've added my 2 cents worth on the anonymity topic. If I were internationally known by another name, perhaps it would matter. But no one outside a very small circle know me and even they know that I am TKGS.

Just a quick clarification:

1) Bishop Williamson did not prohibit people from posting anonymously;

2) He simply gives his opinion, and the reasons for it;

3) Having heard it, I buy into it;

4) When you see the video, you can make your own choice;

5) I don't condemn anyone for making their choice, whatever it is;

6) The part that got me was the realization that His Excellency focuses only on the principle, and deliberately ignores the consequences ("let the chips fall where they may");

7) Because inverting this (i.e., making decisions based on consequences rather than principles) is the seed of compromise;

8) It also occurred to me that I was setting a bad example for my priest (i.e., How can I expect him to join the resistance and denounce the scandalous April 15 doctrinal declaration, as Bishop Williamson declared all SSPX priests must, knowing there will be consequences to him for doing so, if I myself am not even willing to post except anonymously?).

9) But at the end of the day, I happen to believe that Bishop WIlliamson is the "great man" of our times (since Archbishop Lefebvre died), and I desire to be like him.

10) Certainly His Excellency does not give advice he is not willing to take, and his recent story has shown a willingness for martyrdom and letting the chips fall where they may.

11) Nobody needs to defend their position to me.

12) I simply explain my motivations here; nothing more/nothing less.

13) There are plenty of good reasons to post anonymously.

14) I just choose to forego them them, for the reasons stated by His Excellency.

If our enemies and friends really want to find who any of us are, it would depend on how big of a footprint each of us have made respectively in the Traditional world.

I have said enough things here before, that if someone wanted to do some detective work, it would not take long to figure out who I am in what passes for reality. :-)

For example..........

1) First and only male teacher when OLMCA Academy in New Hamburg Ontario started up.

2) Lay apostle for a time (before OLMCA) in Winnipeg under Father Girouard and Father Rusak.

3) Contributing writer to Convictions magazine, before that publication changed into a different format, and subsequently disappeared all together. (cf issue and article Souls of Stone Feb March 2008, and the issue on Mary Queen of Scots)

4) Well known to DS Frs. Rostand and Wegner.

5) Well known to His Excellency Bishop Williamson, being one of the founding members of the doctrinal conferences prior to the expulsion of His Excellency.

6) First guest on inaugural broadcast of Swords and Space radio, speaking on The Canticle for Leibowitz.

So have some fun doing some detective work. :smile:
