  • The SSPX isn't perfect. It has its share of scandals and problems like everything else.
There is so much good and holiness that has come from the SSPX.  Let's discuss the good.

Our short time attending Mass at local SSPX was a blessing from God.  It also gave our former pastor to overcome his persecution from the NO diocese.    Thanks to SSPX we learned so much about the Catholic faith that we didn't learn from the novus ordo.  We had access to so many Catholic books too.  We were blessed to have Father Fahnestock to teach us about the Battle of Lempanto.   We learned so much from Father Robinson too.

There are times when I was against the SSPX joining with Rome.
Maybe we are wrong.  I don't know.  I'm just a sinner.  Only God knows.   Let's pray that the SSPX  will continue to keep the faith when they join Rome.   Isn't being under Rome is what makes us Catholic?
The main thing is to love, know and serve God.  As Catholics, we offer our sufferings up to God.

May God bless you and keep you

  • It's not that simple.

Principles are important. When the principles change, the behavior will eventually change as well. Just because the SSPX has 4 decades of positive inertia doesn't mean they haven't recently switched their direction for the worse.

Compromise with evil is NEVER a good thing. Vatican II is noxious and must be 100% avoided. It is the greatest disaster to befall the Church -- but Bp. Fellay is starting to warm up to it a bit. At least more than he should.

No one said that everyone and everything in the neo-SSPX is evil. Just that we can't happily support them any longer. I don't believe in their new mission at all.

They are making a practical accord with MODERNIST Rome, which +ABL was against. And right he should have been against it -- it would be a foolish move.

We all want Rome to convert back to Tradition. We all love Rome. But right now Rome is poisonous and noxious to the Faith, so we must sadly keep our distance.

This is how +ABL felt, right up till his death. We love Rome, but we must stay away until she corrects Her errors and returns to the one True Faith, which is inherently Traditional.

The main thing is to love, know and serve God.  As Catholics, we offer our sufferings up to God.

Being “under Rome” is a necessary attribute to being Catholic but it is not sufficient or even the primary attribute. Pope Pius XII said in Mystici Corporis that, 'only those are really to be included as members of the Church who have been baptized and profess the true faith and have not unhappily withdrawn from Body-unity, or for grave faults been excluded by legitimate authority. For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one Body.' This is a
paraphrase of St. Robert Bellarmine’s definition. These attributes are not of equal rank.  The principle of unity in the Church that binds the “authority” and the “members who have been baptized” is that they “profess the true faith.”

When the “authority” and the “true faith” are in conflict, it is the “true faith” that must be followed because “without (truth) faith, it is impossible to please God” (Heb 11:6) and “we ought to obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29)

The important thing is to know the true faith.  The rule of faith is Dogma.  The new SSPX believes that the rule of faith is the pope and therefore to be in an irregular relationship with papal authority is to be in an irregular relationship with the faith. The propaganda line in every SSPX chapel emphasizes the need to be under Roman authority. The leadership has already decided to go to Rome and they want everyone to follow them.  The rule of faith is dogma and when the pope is overturning dogma his authority is not to be followed.

Even the pope, who exercises the greatest authority of all men cannot be obeyed whenever he orders anything contrary to the virtue of Religion which would include everything directly or even indirectly harmful to the faith including our immemorial ecclesiastical traditions by which the faith can be known and communicated to others.

It is not to “love, know and serve God,” but to “know, love and serve God.”  The correct order is essential. We first must know God and we know Him through believing in His revealed truth. We then “love” him by conforming our lives to His truth and serve Him by keeping His commandments.

It is not simply that Bishop Fellay is betraying the faith.  It is that he does not know what it is so he could not defend it during the “doctrinal discussions.”  If he knew that dogma was the rule of faith, the doctrinal discussions would have been over in a few hours.  He would have submitted his own Dubia and we would still be waiting for a response from Rome.

The love of God be your motivation, the will of God your guiding principle, the glory of God your goal.

  • This is a pointless thread.

The SSPX doing a 180 at a time when it is least defensible to do so, given the current Pope, is inexplicable at best, and not justifiable at worst.

  • Are you aware, Viva, of the treatment SSPX continues to mete out to + Williamson. Their actions are disgraceful in the true sense of the word. And they welcomed the Summorum Pontificuм, which implies that the Novus Ordo and the true Sacrifice are of equal value. They are caving in to the heresy of  modernism.

  • +Fellay will go down in history either as the Restorer of the Church who brought about a revival of traditional Catholicism; or as a Traitor second only to Judas in feeding the legacy of +ABL into the maw of the Conciliar Monster. Time will tell. In the meantime we carry on. Pray, sacrifice, and do whatever is in your means to prepare for the second option.

  • Back in 1987
    Quoting Abp Lefebvre

BISHOP WILLIAMSON QUOTES ARCHBISHOP LEFEBVRE ON PRAYING FOR A PERSONAL PRELATURE FROM ROME:

(Just change the name Gagnon to Pozzo, and it could be written now)

Ridgefield Seminary Letters to Friends and Benefactors

    December 1987

    http://www.leofec.com/bishop-williamson/108.html

But will the Pope be able to settle the question of the Mass and the Society as several things indicate he would like to do? … how fierce the opposition will be in the Roman Curia and amongst the world's bishops, to any papal approval of the Tridentine Mass or of the Society associated with it.

Here is what Archbishop Lefebvre wrote to me in a letter dated November 20: "I think that as his visit continues, Cardinal Gagnon is more and more convinced that we are right to be doing what we are doing. However, if his visit is useful, it is not the answer.

"We shall have to find a form of institution to protect us from the Roman Curia and the diocesan chanceries. In Rome we shall need a secretariat or commission, composed of members agreeing with what we think and do, to help the Society set itself up with three bishops chosen from within the Society, to form like an "Armed Services' Vicariat", with all the powers necessary to continue our work, independently of alI other  bishops. A way must be found for all Traditional movements and initiatives to normalize their juridical situation so that they can continue to ask for the help of our own bishops.

"The whole thing is to know whether Rome, that is to say the Pope, will have the courage, despite the howling set up by the bishops and the Roman Curia, to grant us such a degree of independence. There are several Cardinals who will support Cardinal Gagnon. But it will not be easy. Already the episcopates are getting together to prevent a solution.

"In any case, if they do not give me the authorization to consecrate bishops, 1 shall do it without authorization. This is the most practical and pressing point. Let us continue to pray, especially to Our Lady of Fatima."

The solution here envisaged by Archbishop Lefebvre, a personal prelature, like an Army Vicariat for instance, is from the point of view of Canon Law a very flexible formula and may be the best suited to the needs of the situation. Whereas a local bishop has jurisdiction over Catholics in a given locality, or geographical diocese, a personal prelate has jurisdiction by his person over Catholics in some way connected to him. Thus an Army Vicar has in person direct jurisdiction over army chaplains or priests and through them over Catholic servicemen and their families attached to that army.

Thus Monsignor Lefebvre or his successor would have full powers of a diocesan bishop firstly over the Society priests and their faithful, but also over priests and faithful outside the Society who would resort to him because of their attachment to the Traditional rite of Mass. He would be in effect an alternative Ordinary or bishop for all such Traditional priests and faithful, without their necessarily having to quit the diocese to which canonically they normally belong. Such a solution has the great advantage of largely corresponding to an already existing and honest state of affairs. Will it come about? That depends upon God's grace and men's free will. It is, as always, and more than ever, a question of prayer.

A great way to pray is to do the Exercises of St. Ignatius for five days. …

Most sincerely yours in His service,

    Fr. Richard Williamson

  • Except that

    A) Pozzo is virulently anti-Traditional, and has some very "interesting" quotes attributed to him, basically un-masking Rome's true intentions with the SSPX. Do a Google search for details.

    B) The current Pope is Francis "the destroyer", rather than John Paul II

    C) This letter took place before +ABL opened his eyes and saw the light, admitting the hopelessness of dialoguing with Rome as it was. He learned just how deep the rot went, how sick Rome was, and that Rome will have to convert FIRST before any approval from Rome is to be envisaged. See any of the Archbishop's writings AFTER 1988.

    D) How many "carcasses" of Trad organizations that had made deals with Rome existed back in 1987? I would daresay very few, IF ANY. The FSSP didn't exist yet. Neither did the ICK. Neither had Campos done their deal. And all the ones since then. Pope Francis hadn't forbidden any religious orders to say the Tridentine Mass yet. And so on and so on.

But today, we see the sad results of all these organizations that compromised. They compromised, they got their recognition, and they are neutralized. End of story. None of them was able to effect a renewal of Tradition within the Church. They were all co-opted, controlled, and marginalized and kept from doing any real good.

    E)  ABL Rejected the Modernist  "Professio fidei" (the "profession of faith") that +Fellay and company will have to sign.

  • I see a lot of good in the SSPX.

It's important to see and work for some link with the Roman authorities;  and, I think that is what the Society is doing.  The Society has a good system in place to produce good priests who minister to the faithful.  They offer good schools and chapels across the nation.

Now independent chapels vary a great deal.  Many have disgruntled ex-SSPX priests whose only song is a criticism of the Conciliar Church or see covetous Jєωs in every shadow.

I agree with some of your points, but independent chapels vary because some of them have priests with dubious orders.

I think the latter..............the Restoration of the Church is what the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is all about. That is a job reserved by Our Lord for Mary, and so presumptuous for any man to think he will get the glory instead.  We know from the prophecies about how infinitesimally small the Church is going to become before it revives, so the Conciliar Church is not going to be converted and saved.
