  • The music was "OK" but I would have preferred the standard Gregorian Chant normally heard at a solemn Requiem Mass.
I'm sorry, but you can't improve upon Chant.

I didn't get to hear any of the Chant, the Libera Me, or anything.

Matthew Sowada's funeral at the Seminary (Oct. 2000) was better than this.

You knew him? He was in my class at the seminary. He was even sitting at my table in the refectory the week he died. (Each week the seminarians were assigned a different seat).
It was eerie looking at that empty seat for the rest of the week. His room was at the very end of the 3rd floor; a few doors down from me.
Later on, another Matthew moved into that room. I made sure to tell him about the previous occupant of his room.

At the peak, we had (6) Matthews out of about 40 seminarians.

  • He died while at the seminary?  I searched online a bit and saw that he was 19 years old.  What happened?

He drowned during the Wednesday extended recreation. I think he wasn't supposed to be swimming, but he wanted to swim across one of the rivers. There was a current under the water that couldn't be seen on the surface. He got a cramp in his leg and drowned.

  • I recognize that last name! I knew a Sowada, long since deceased, at one of the central MN chapels—Matthew's grandmother, I believe. It's a very common Midwest German/Polish last name.
