Resistance sacristan help - how to use these followers?

  • I'm the owner of SIX of these followers:

(No, I didn't pay $52 for each pair -- the price has gone up)

Unfortunately, they don't work with standard 7/8" candles, even though they claim to. The top opening is the same as the regular (classic, traditional) brass followers that I grew up with, but these newer ones tend to be more "arrow-shaped" and they don't have the patent stamped on the bottom -- maybe the design has to be different.

When I try to put a candle into them, it gets stuck about halfway into the follower! I still haven't figured out what exactly is different about them.

These are standard, 7/8", straight, 51% beeswax altar candles. They are not tapered or anything like that.

Also, the weight seems to be fine. If the thing didn't narrow too soon, it would probably serve its function.

Long story short, how can I use them? If I could find a slightly narrower candle (like, say, 3/4" -- if they exist) would they work?  Or are these followers just garbage?

Has anyone else run into this problem?

    Thanks,

    Matthew

  • I'd suggest having someone with an appropriately sized end-mill or even high speed drill bore them out a bit. The re-bore need not go so far as the existing inside shoulder, but at least within 1/2" of the top - assuming doing that won't cut clear through the follower. If the depth to molten wax is much more, the follower will tend to overheat.

  • Dear Matthew,

It is important that the candle has the same thickness on top and on the bottom of the 7/8 candle. If the candle is shaped like a taper candle the followers will not work. It is also important to use the exact size of follower for the respective size of the candle. Usually, for a 7/8 candle a Nr 1 follower is used.
