So it seems like pablo is still involved.  I would be wary of sending any of my private information to him.

    I don't disagree.

Yes, I can confirm that the above is Pablo's e-mail address. I used to correspond with him, remember, back in the earliest days of the Resistance.

But still, for those who want to go on a retreat, it's an option. Fr. Pfeiffer probably does a great job of giving an Ignatian Retreat, judging from what I know of him, his sermons, etc.

Sharing private info with Pablo is a decision that each person has to make for himself. It's a decision I should let each person make for himself.

EDIT: It looks like you edited your post before the 5 minutes were up. Oh well -- too slow!

You can scratch the "probably". I've heard praise from two men who went to the retreat last year. No surprise, of course. Fr. Pfeiffer is great at preaching sermons. I listened to a 50 minute sermon of his last night and only regretted a little bit having stayed up late to do so.

  • There are hundreds (probably more like thousands) of good books for spiritual reading. However, one doesn't go on retreat to do spiritual reading. You could do that anytime, at home. Even something as edifying as the life of Padre Pio would be a distraction from what you're supposed to be doing at a retreat -- coming face to face with yourself (in all its horror) and looking inwards at the state of your soul (and your life's priorities in general).

It's a place where there's "nowhere to hide" from yourself and your conscience, as it were. Not even a pious or even edifying distraction like a Catholic movie, book, or conversation.

So they allow 2 set books: the Spiritual Exercises, and the Imitation of Christ. These are closely aligned with the retreat itself. They assist one in making the appointed meditations.

I hope this answers your question.

  • Just to clarify, if I understand it right, the Christian Warfare book is the one the SSPX now uses on retreats (?).  I think it more or less supplanted the old blue paperback prayer booklets the SSPX used to use on retreat, which had the morning and night prayers, Stations of the Cross, and other prayers used on retreat.  I guess that is why VCR was asking.  I imagine if they don't mention it, they probably don't want you bringing it, as they'll probably use something else for prayers.  But the only sure way to know would be to contact the priest(s) giving the retreat.

Maybe you're right. I do know that you need all those prayers. Especially the Stations.

The book wasn't used at the Winona Seminary, which is why I'm not familiar with it. That is where my retreat experiences come from.

For many, many years at Ridgefield, they just used the little blue paperback prayer book:

But then about 5 years ago or so (?), they published the larger, hardback Christian Warfare and used that.  Just curious, did they use the blue one at Winona, or something else?

I can assure you that you will not be sorry for your decision.  Father will be giving retreats again when suitable property is procured and, if you know Father, that will be soon.  If not for the public opposition fueled by, shall we say, those who were not happy to have Father so close to Ridgefield, there would already be a retreat house in operation.  Their opposition is a testimony to the power of his retreats and they should know.

  • I, for one had a tremendous experience with fr. Zendejas when he preached our 30 day retreat, he is a magnificent retreat master. Yes I know that most people cannot get a 30 day retreat but I think it would not be any different with it being a 5 day retreat. I am also sure that the retreats given by Fr. Pfeiffer will be just as beneficial spiritually.
On other news Fr. Edward MacDonald is currently giving a rtreat but it is only to Fr. Pfeiffer's seminarians.
