  • Meanwhile  :roll-laugh2:

(I'm terrible, excuse me...) This video was posted on a TLM site with the following text (which is why I headed straight over here!):

    Quote
"Something big is happening. The SSPX had just celebrated a massive liturgy in Lourdes France (see video), and word has come out recently about a possible reconciliation with Rome in the works. This involves a major accommodation from Rome, wherein the Vatican will permit open criticism of certain docuмents from the Second Vatican Council that are prudential instead of doctrinal. This confirms the teaching of Pope Paul VI and Pope Benedict XVI on Vatican II as well. Pope Francis is said to be pushing for this. Please offer your prayers and rosaries for this intention. Now more than ever, the Catholic Church needs the voice of the SSPX within her bosom."

IDK, maybe the Society thinks one thing, or something again was "lost in translation", or, oh who knows.  :laugh1:

(No, I don't know who that quote came from. I mean, I know who posted it, but not who she was quoting. But as usual, with all things Rome, does it really matter? Someone will invariably be said to have been misquoted, misunderstood, etc confusion which is, last I looked, not of God.)

  • Italian bishop forbids people to receive sacraments from SSPX

Posted on 27 October 2014 by Fr. John Zuhlsdorf
At L’Espresso I saw this, in Italian:

Pope Francis forbids Lefevbrite priests from saying Mass
The follows of the ultra traditionalist French bishop, already excommunicated, are now in Bergoglio’s crosshairs. Through one of his most faithful men he has forbidden them to celebrate Mass and administrate the sacraments. Whoever follows them risks excommunication.

In essence the article says that “new beatings with a stick” have come from “pastor of mercy and forgiveness”.

The Bishop of Albano, Marcello Semeraro, has forbidden the SSPX priests – who have their Italian HQ in Albano, a stone’s throw from Castel Gandolfo and two stone throws from Rome – from administering the sacraments. He also forbade the faithful from receiving the sacraments from the SSPX priests saying that they run the risk of excommunication. This was issued in the form of a notification signed by Bp. Semeraro, who happens to be the secretary of the Gang of Nine assembled by Pope Francis… Cards. Marx, O’Malley, Rodriguez Maradiaga, etc.

The notification was apparently published in no less than the official daily of the Italian Bishops Conference, Avvenire. It seems that he had received numerous requests about the celebration of sacraments by the SSPX. He wrote that “it isn’t an institution… of the Catholic Church”.

The article mentions that the SSPX has 15000 followers in Italy. Given the state of the Church in some places, that’s not nothing.

I didn’t find the Notification in the online version of Avvenire, but that’s no surprise.  It would be interesting to see the actual wording. Did Bp. Semararo raise the specter of excommunication for Catholics in the Diocese of Albano who seek sacraments from the SSPX?

Just lately the Prefect of the CDF, Card. Muller, had a meeting with SSPX leadership which seemed to betoken something positive. This is more than a little chilling, don’t you think?

It also seems as if there is a lack of coordination or of vision on this topic, indeed, a lack of guidance.

  • Oh yes: there's something nasty floating in the pool, that's for sure. I just have no idea what.

The strangest thing is that when I started getting calls this morning, I thought it was about the Society or some such... it wasn't. It was about the Bishops becoming their own little mini-Popes. (The calls were from friends in the conciliar church who, I suppose, are hearing things about the RCC itself breaking up into mini-RCCs??? For example, twice I was asked how "stable" the Society is. I thought the issue was SSPX vs Resistance, but apparently not).

I have no idea what happened at some peoples' "experiences" yesterday (they call it "service" and just about everything but "mass" now, so I guess "experience" is just as good a description of what they do on Sundays as the other descriptions, lol).

However, I think Z sums it up nicely with that last sentence ("It also seems as if there is a lack of coordination or of vision on this topic, indeed, a lack of guidance.") And I imagine it's intended. Frank is big on mini-popes, so maybe one anti-bishop said, "Hey, Society, we embrace you" while the anti-bishop of Albeno is sending a completely different message, and Frank thinks that's just the bees' knees! That, I can see. (Author of confusion and all that...)

Gotta admit, the world does seem to be looking on "with wonder". (And shaking their heads in disgust, but that's the "spirit of vatican 2" for you.)

  • It's the carrot and the stick approach: one Italian bishop of a suburbicarian see to Rome (in the Pope's back pocket) gets nasty where the SSPX headquarters at Albano is located - over in France "please come and do your stuff at Lourdes". Translation: "look what you could get if you make nice with Rome and contrariwise what you might get if you don't." Same old story.
    Please pray for my soul.

  • Let's not dismiss this as just another rogue bishop who is anti-Tradition.

The bishop in question works very closely with Pope Francis.

And even if it just affects the SSPX faithful in Italy, that is still 15,000 souls. This is huge news.

This news means that the heat is being turned up on Bishop Fellay. Serious pressure is being brought to bear. Will he have the fortitude to stand up for what's right, or will he cave?

Yes and where does this leave + Fellay's assertion that he was assured by Cardinal Mueller et al that there would be no punishments from Rome back in September ?

This could mean many things: Mueller is in trouble for standing up to Kasper at the Synod and in the book he co-authored before the synod; or Mueller was leading +F up the garden path; or Mueller was himself deceived (a dupe): or the Pope is playing fast and loose with the curia; and on and on and on...

Moral (as you said it Matthew): "Watch out !"

        Suburbicarian Diocese of Albano

        NOTIFICATION TO PASTORS [PARISH PRIESTS]
ON THE "SOCIETY OF SAINT PIUS X"

In the past few weeks, requests of clarification have reached the Diocesan Chancery regarding the celebration of Sacraments at the "Society of Saint Pius X" of Albano Laziale.

Regarding it, it is right and proper to point out that the above-mentioned "Society" is not an institution (neither parish, nor association) of the Catholic Church.

This applies even after the decree of the Congregation for Bishops of January 21, 2009, by which the Holy Father Benedict XVI, reaching out in good will in response to reiterated requests by the Superior General of the Society of Saint Pius X, revoked the excommunication in which the four Prelated had incurred since June 30, 1988.

This was highlighted by Benedict XVI with his Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church of March 10, 2009: "the Society has no canonical status in the Church, and its ministers – even though they have been freed of the ecclesiastical penalty – do not legitimately exercise any ministry in the Church." (in AAS CI [2009], n. 4, p. 272). The same Benedict XVI, in the following Letter m. p. Ecclesiae Unitatem, of July 2, 2009, added: "the remission of the excommunication was a measure taken in the context of ecclesiastical discipline to free the individuals from the burden of conscience constituted by the most serious of ecclesiastical penalties. However, the doctrinal questions obviously remain and until they are clarified the Society has no canonical status in the Church and its ministers cannot legitimately exercise any ministry." (in AAS CI [2009], p. 710-711).

As a consequence of the above, it is right and proper to restate what had been formulated in the Pastoral Note on the Society of Saint Pius X of [former bishop of Albano] Dante Bernini, in which it can be read:

The Catholic faithful cannot participate at Mass, neither request and/or receive Sacraments from or in the Society. Acting otherwise would mean to break communion with the Catholic Church.

Therefore, any Catholic faithful who requests and receives Sacraments in the Society of Saint Pius X, will place himself de facto in the condition of no longer being in communion with the Catholic Church. A readmission to the Catholic Church must be preceded by an adequate personal path of reconciliation, according to the ecclesiastical discipline established by the Bishop.

It is sincerely saddening that such options [measures], particularly when in reference to the Christian Initiation of Children and Adolescents, be in constrast with the pastoral orientations of the Italian Church and, consequently, with the choices of the Diocese of Albano, where formative paths for the growth and maturation of the life of faith are favored.

To the Parish priests, the duty of providing adequate information to the faithful.

From the Albano Chancery, October 14, 2014, Prot. 235/14.

        + Marcello Semeraro, Bishop.

The love of God be your motivation, the will of God your guiding principle, the glory of God your goal.

Here is a post from Fr. Z …

My hat is off to you for being able to control your gag reflex long enough to read the rubbish that Zed writes. He combines the most charming qualities of the egomaniac and the bottom feeder in one compact (dare one say off-the-rack-Napoleonic?) frame.

I had the misfortune ten or so years ago to hear him preach once (at Manhattan's Holy Innocents Church). Happily, it was only once. I recall telling a friend that Zed's rhetorical style reminded me of George W. Bush on an especially bad day. I was, alas, being a tad uncharitable to W, since I now realize what I couldn't have known at the time: that Zed's nearest analogue in the secular speechmaking world is Caliph Barak I.

Seriously? He's not only lost most of his marbles, but all his shame to boot (assuming he ever had any)!
