Whether this man is aspiring to the Priesthood or is a Brother candidate, I don't know.

But this is how a Catholic man

    a) about to enter the consecrated state or

    b) anyone with a sense of decorum or reverence,

behaves in church, during a liturgical procession, with a blessed sacramental?

Seriously? Liturgical acts and blessed sacramentals are no laughing matter.

It may seem like nothing to some, but don't take this lightly friends.

Matthew, would you have behaved like this at the seminary?

Would any seminarian before Vatican II?

Standards for future priests and religious were high (and rightfully so). Candidates would've been out on their ear.

And these men are our future priests, the apostles of Jesus and Mary?

  • Seems to me like he was about to put the candle back but realized he still needed it and reacted awkwardly, especially when he saw he was on camera.

I don't know what horror I was expecting but that was not it.

Agree with wallflower.  He made a mistake on camera and was covering his embarassment with nervous laughter.  No disrespect was intended.  May I suggest that nobody who doesn't want to be a true priest or religious comes to OL of Mt. Carmel?
Yes, the ceremony lacked the polish and dignity it would have had at a pre-Vatican II seminary.  The same ceremony at Winona or any other well-estblished SSPX/traditional seminary would possess a grandeur not present on this clip.  Watch the clip again with attention to the accommodations.  The building to the left of the chapel is the seminarians' dormitory and school.  The cells are TINY with leaky, unscreened windows and no storage.  The "dining hall," kitchen, "library" and classrooms are all in this building.  The chapel is exactly as you see, both inside and out.  The roads are rutted and muddy.  The cement slab is where the Pfeiffer home stood until a year ago.  Note the luxurious corrogated tin garages and maintenance shop, the magnificent priests' quarters (to right of slab), and the spacious, handicapped accessible "parking lot!"   The men who took the cassock on Sunday have made this place their home since the end of September and have committed to staying for any number of years until ordained priests or brothers.  For some, it may be their permanent home until death.  As for the sister's residence, (not shown), it is equally posh!
The five seminarians,  the priests, and Sister, need our prayers.  If anyone wants or requires luxury and grandeur, the ability to walk with perfect dignity and nobility, to make no mistakes, or, certainly, to be very sure they do not appear in an amateur video on You Tube, as Fr. Chazal told a would-be seminarian displeased with similar accommodations in the Philippines, "I can name six seminaries where you can go and where they'll be glad to accept you."
Please give this man a break!

St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • Maybe he was playing around, in the transition from the outside to the inside (around minute 12:05) you can see a person's lit candle at the very left and it seems the seminarian was interacting with the person, maybe pretending like he was going to light his candle with theirs, or who knows, I don't think he deserves to be kicked out though, I've spoken to him, he's very humble. He's been wanting to be a priest for many years. He had seen B. Williamson and asked if he could be a seminarian. B. Williamson told him there wasn't going to be a seminary. Then Fr. Pfeiffer saw him serve Mass and said "you need to come with us!" We can't tell from the video what was happening and should reserve judgement until meeting or it's obvious he is not taking the vocation seriously.

I watched the video.  I thought I saw something strange, so I downloaded it using a program and broke it out into individual frames.  I looked at every frame during the re-entry into the chapel, and one frame confirmed my impression.  I have attached the still image of this frame here.  Judge for yourself.

  • Have you done the work?  have you examined this video frame by frame like I have?  If not, you ought not to comment on my discovery.

  • As I've commented before and this is yet more evidence of it.  The Resistance's reason d'etre and the very characters and personalities it has attracted to itself, is it's greatest weakness and the reason it will not hold together.

Here, we have a man essentially smiling for a few seconds on camera.  Completely inoffensive and not even noticeable to a sane and mentally well balanced person who has other fish to fry in their life, diapers to change, taxes to pay etc.

There could be a dozen legitimate reasons for his smile and gesture.  I am sure that in every SSPX ordination for the last 30 years you could find a moment to nitpick, some far more egregious than this if you had the whole thing on video.

I would bet, that new seminarians break wind sometimes.  Hey, we all do.  When iPhone 9 has a directional microphone nobody will ever be able to be ordained.

In those first 30 years we did not have YouTube and 30 min videos.  Nor did we have people with tons of time on their hands to find gnats to strain.

    It's like an OCD convention.

The Resistance is going to be a fish-bowl of, well, resistance and as the linkage to and relevance of the SSPX (or neo-SSPX if you prefer) becomes more historically distant and the rancor less newsworthy, the Resistance will, MUST, turn on itself.

Sides will be taken, daggers drawn.

    I agree with Frances.

If the seminarian in question is the one Icterus ...err...defaced... then I can speak with confidence on this matter, as I've met the man!

    1. He donated lots of stuff to my Resistance chapel. An altar-worthy Crucifix, linens, candlesticks, a kneeler, and more.

    2. As for nervousness, etc. that's just his personality. God understands, and anyone who doesn't can mind their own business!

    3. Pre-Vatican II, the Church could be very choosy about priests -- good looking, great personality, perfect psychological profile, as well as all the usual qualifications. During this Crisis? Not so much. We have to focus on what is NECESSARY (good philosophical/theological formation, knowledge, and the will to oppose modernism and Vatican II) while the other things have to be secondary or even given up.

This made me laugh out loud.

And, if someone is worried about a moment of nervousness captured on a camera, then they have a screw loose.  I try to take the advice of St. Ignatius on the clergy:

    Quote
'See that you all follow the bishop, even as Jesus Christ does the Father, and the priests as you would the apostles; and reverence the deacons, as being the institution of God.'
    -Letter to the Smyrnaeans, 8

  • I watched the video before and didn't even notice what the poster complained about. Then after watching the offensive moments of the clip, I was surprised anyone had a problem with it.

  • I understand your point, and that it was a joke, but you're still making fun of a devout seminarian in a very public (Internet-wide) manner. Would you want that to be done with a picture of you? And even if you would, have you asked this seminarian if he feels the same way?

Anyhow, I'm very grateful to him for what he provided my little Resistance chapel. Based on the "wealth" of the chapel owner and those who have supported it thus far, we should have *far, far* less than we have right now. One can't buy all this equipment with the meager donations we've received thus far. And I can only provide the building and land. I'm still paying for the building! No extra cash here.

But thanks to this seminarian's generosity, we're enjoying a higher level of "proper chapel equipment" than our donations would have merited.

And note that he's also generous enough to donate HIMSELF to the cause as well. That is a cause for praising God, not over-scrutinizing the poor man.
