  • We don't even have this now in the SSPX. SSPV, or any independent chapel.

    2.  The Privilege of a Portable Altar is conceded either by law or by an indult from the Apostolic See alone.
You don’t seem to want to understand that a Jeep hood is not an appropriate place to celebrate Mass, without the necessity of doing so.
I would be willing to bet your sentimental rationalizing is shared by the majority of SSPXers, and that’s a large problem:
You can be led anywhere, even into the conciliar church.

  • I meant 1990’s, not 1900’s, and referred to SSPXers, not some secular non-Catholics.
So the 1990s had more modest fashion than the 1900s?
How do you know that family is "some secular non-Catholics"?  I think you presume too much.

There was no SSPX in the 1900’s.  What are you talking about?
I said 1990s SSPX would not be posting such pics in this country because they were teaching such attire was inappropriate in those days.
But today, they obviously wish to signify more liberal and slovenly norms (their rapprochement with the world as they head into the conciliar church with their own Vaiican IIB).

I think the sspx has had issues longer than you think, and I still think you presume too much all too frequently.

Thank you for agreeing that this is an issue.
As for my “presumptions,” whatever are you talking about?
I posted a pic of the Academy boys all in shorts, and contrasted that pic to the teaching of the SSPX here that shorts were not appropriate attire for boys.
Of what presumption are you speaking?

  • Here’s the boys all in shorts: (need to be logged in to see)
Bishop Willamson taught that men should not wear shorts, so I stopped wearing shorts, no big deal.

Those are hairy legged men in the pictures, not little children.

Where I live it is very hot, and yet it is not wise to wear shorts because of sunburn, bug bites (mosquito, fire ants, wasps, chiggers, no-see-ums...…), thorn cuts, scrapes, muffler burns...…

  • Here is the Handbook for the Academy in Denver, which still implicitly maintains the old teaching (at least as recently as the 2016-2017 school year), as on p.15, it stipulates that boys in grades 7-12 will wear school issued t-shirts and pants for recreation.

  • Using this logic, what’s wrong with a novus ordo table?
    .
Seriously, the main issue with the hood of a Jeep is that this vehicle is not efficient enough, and it’s high carbon emissions aren’t kosher with +Francis’ earth-worshiping goals.  +Fellay better tell his priests to start using Tesla hoods or some other hybrids or else they’ll get excommunicated.

This model should work perfectly then. Even the doors open up like heavenly wings ::) (well maybe not angelic wings after all ;))

What I see in that picture barely qualifies as "shorts".  For a couple of them, it goes below their knee, and for the ones that it doesn't, it's really close.  It's not like they're wearing those obscene "short shorts" that were popular on men in the 1970s.

I am aware that you don’t have a problem with shorts (at least longer shorts), but that’s not the issue here.

The issue is that the SSPX used to have several issues with shorts (modesty, undignified, slovenly, “noblesse oblige,” etc), but in practice at least, seems to no longer share its former concerns.

That is my dog in the fight here.

  • Regarding the phrase/concept “noblesse oblige:”

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noblesse_oblige

Note: “Nobility” in the Catholic context refers not to aristocracy, but to the possession and profession of our traditional Catholic religion, and the idea that those few of us who possess it ought to act certain ways.  I recall hearing this concept endorsed in SSPX sermons, and rightly so.

Correct, Fr. Beck would mention this idea of nobility many times in speeches and sermons.

Shorts are shorts and pants are pants. Bishop Williamson said men should not wear shorts, he didn't qualify that.

I think all of you should post the pictures that you are commenting on, for I've only seen one picture and it was shown like on page 2 or 3. The OP is a discussion about pictures and the OP has no pictures.

OP provided pics.  If you see the pic, there's MAYBE the bottom 2 centimeters of one boy's kneecap showing; for the most part they cover the knees.

  • In the latest Rorate Coeli Report contains pictures of:

    1) A Harley Davidson trike, painted in flames, with "Ora Pro Nobis" painten on the rear.  It is touted favorably as being a unique apostolate;

    2) Pics of the priest from the Syracuse (Warners) Academy posing with the boys, ALL of whom are dressed in shorts before running the Academy marathon fundraisere;

    3) Fr. Novak celebrating Mass on the hood of a Jeep to "reenact" Fr. Kapuan having donee so during wartime in Korea.  Is it appropriate to celebrat Mass on a Jeep without necessity?

    Is any of this problematic?
