  • So, Matthew, Ladi, Pax and others, do you wear these shorts and flip flops?

So you are taking a page out of SeanJohnson's book.  Johnson took the liberty of answering this question for us:  "Almost certainly."  For the, oh, for the 4th or 5th time in a few weeks here on CI, someone assumes that by defending something from the imputation of sin it means that you yourself do the thing you're defending.  I think that shorts on men ... and flip-flops ... are, for this most part, low class.  I have NEVER in my life worn flip-flops (always hated them with a passion) and I never wear shorts in public, and on the rare occasion when I wear them at home (e.g. for working out), the ones I wear are always knee-length ... since I consider it immodest  to expose thighs (even at home around family without any threat of occasion of sin).  I've been ridiculed by people in public for wearing full-length pants in 100-degree summer weather.  When I was at the seminary, I wore a thick, full-length, black wool cassock (not those thin ones that altar boys wear) ... with a full layer of clothes on underneath (I always wore pants underneath and a regular shirt, so I could just take off the cassock and still be fully dressed), even in the extremely humid 100-degree weather of the Minnesota summer, even in my cell when no one was looking ... offering it up as penance for those who offend God by dressing immodestly.  So you guys really need to stop running your mouths.

This puerile form of attack needs to stop.  When you have nothing substantial to say, you childishly launch into ad hominems.

Bishop Willamson taught that shorts are the attire of children

Maybe he's talking about his country, England?  Did you ever think of that?  It's certainly American to wear shorts since the 60s.  If you're not going to allow the introduction of Lederhosen into the debate because it's a german custom, then you can't introduce an English-bishop's commentary either, since his customs are different from America.

Your posting is a total strawman.

The only reason I stopped wearing shorts is because Bp. Williamson said that shorts are the attire of children and should not be worn by men.

Do you have a horse in this race? Do you wear those shorts and flip flops?

No, Sean, this makes several times in the past few weeks that you've launched into a personal attack against me, once committing a grave slander, after getting wound up defending your side of the issue.  I'm calling you out for this tactic and attempting to expose it for what it is.  You need to get yourself under control.

instead of acknowledging there may be some merit to the idea that forbidding shorts to children is a discipline and training in masculinity

There is absolutely no merit in my eyes, from a masculinity standpoint.  There is an argument from a catholic culture/high class perspective, but that has nothing to do with teaching boys how to be men.  The idea that you would preach to boys about masculinity, through fashion, is such a waste of time (and a total contradiction), because men (on the whole) are not fashion oriented.  It would be like attempting to teach girls how to care for infants, by telling them how to sharpen a lawn mower blade.

  • Where did I launch an ad hominem or an attack?

In your insinuation that those defending the morality of wearing knee-length shorts themselves wear shorts.  Even if they did, it would not matter.  Ad hominem doesn't necessarily mean personal insult, as it is often understood; it just means you're going after the person of your opponent instead of directly confronting the issue.  So, for instance, if a former adulterer were arguing that adultery was sinful, instead of actually rebutting his reasons, you start attacking him for having been an adulterer.  That has no bearing on whether or not his argument is sound.  It's a distraction and a dishonest debating tactic.

Except in this case you quoted me, Last Tradhican as the one  "This puerile form of attack needs to stop.  When you have nothing substantial to say, you childishly launch into ad hominems"., when I did no such thing. It discredits you to be so jumpy.

Are you enjoying your satanic computer, that's you're using right now?  That was developed in the 60s too.  So everything from the 1960s onwards is wrong?  Ok, makes sense.

    Drama queen.
Please explain how one can “gravely slander” a forum pseudonym!
Aside from that, here is what we know of Laxislaus:
    1) He supports women wearing pants
    2) He supports women wearing makeup
    3) He believes marital sodomy is parvity of matter (and then falsifies Alphonsus, to make him say that if one single approved theology manual says something, Alphonsus says you can go with it)
    4) He supports men wearing shorts
I would have to go back and see what other feminist or liberal causes he supports.
You would make a very good Novus Ordo confessor.

  • Here's another way to look at this tactic.

Even IF one of your opponents DID wear shorts, that does not mean that their argument in favor of its being licit is invalid.

What you're implying is that the person MUST have decided for some ulterior motive to wear shorts and then must be rationalizing AFTER THE FACT to justify his own actions.  Of course, it's just as possible that FIRST the person decided that it's OK to wear shorts, and that is in fact why he wears them.

STICK TO THE RATIONAL ARGUMENT.  Whether or not any given person is sincere or properly motivated, that's ultimately in the internal forum and it cannot be proven one way or another, especially on this forum.  It has no bearing on the argument.  An adulterer can argue convincingly that adultery is in fact a sin, despite the fact that he's committing the sin.

Uhm, because I have in fact revealed my actual identity on this forum.
