  • Oportet Christum Regnare - a Resistance magazine by Hugh Akins
    http://ca-rc.com/

I'm sure many of you have heard of Hugh Akins, the author of ѕуηαgσgυє Rising and longtime President of the League of Christ the King.

Hugh Akins publishes a quarterly journal called "Oportet Christum Regnare" (Latin for "Christ Must Reign") which Akins describes as "A Catholic Action Quarterly of Counterrevolutionary Resistance and Restoration."

The latest issue just arrived in the mailbox yesterday, and now that I have some free time to look it over (today being Sunday), I can share with you my impressions of this magazine.

This particular issue has 23 concise, well-written articles, editorials and interviews by various authors, some of whom are priests. The magazine itself has Fr. Francois Chazal as its chaplain -- a good choice considering that Fr. Chazal is one of the many sane priests of the mainstream Resistance, united with the 4 Resistance bishops. Fr. Chazal has managed to avoid letting God's gifts go to his head, and he has thus far placed the duties of the priesthood, truth and Catholic morality above any human considerations (human loyalty, friendship, etc.) While Father is not unique in this regard -- there are other good Resistance priests -- I nevertheless applaud Hugh Akins' choice of chaplain for this magazine.

The magazine arrived in a padded envelope and has a nice full-color, glossy cover like a paperback book. Magazines have thin glossy paper for the front cover; this particular magazine uses thick cardstock, also glossy and full color, to better protect the magazine. You know those paperbound hand-missals used all over the Trad world? (Angelus Press has a brown one, there is a red one, and then a light blue one put out by the FSSP) -- the magazine is roughly shaped and built like that, only the cover is glossy rather than matte. This choice of binding says something about the magazine's overall intended purpose: to be an informative and permanent reference in your home library. The latest issue has 57 pages. Other issues have as many as 68 pages, so apparently the page count varies.

I really like what I've seen, in this issue as well as the many back-issues. This really is the Resistance's answer to "The Angelus". That is to say, the kind of magazine you want to keep in a magazine box, sorted by year, for future reference and/or homeschooling high school kids' book reports.

This isn't the kind of magazine that you don't need as long as you keep up with the news online. The way the editor (Hugh Akins) has curated so many articles of interest to Traditional Catholics (some of which are available online, and many of which are "original") and put it all together in one place, this magazine really adds a lot of value.

The articles touch on a variety of subjects: World news, US foreign policy, politics, developments in the conciliar church, SSPX, the Resistance, etc.  But these articles all cohere around a central theme: the restoration of the Kingship of Christ. Hence the title, "Christ Must Reign".

I agree with Bishop Williamson, Sean Johnson, and others that the world needs such a Resistance publication. "Oportet Christum Regnare" isn't just a great Resistance magazine. It is THE ONLY PRINT MAGAZINE OF ITS KIND, head and shoulders above everything else, because it has no competitors! In other words, this magazine is AHEAD OF ITS TIME, a pioneer, and we Resistance supporters literally are not worthy of it.

If we fail to support this magazine, then reality will catch up with us, and we will end up with the magazine our support, numbers, resources, and enthusiasm deserve: no magazine at all. So we should support and enjoy Opportet Christum Regnare while it exists. Get while the getten's good!

Each issue begins with a letter from Fr. Francois Chazal (Chaplain, League of Christ the King), which is exclusive to Oportet Christum Regnare. i.e., it is not found anywhere on the internet.

Due to its varied subject matter, I think that subscriptions to Oportet Christum Regnare would appeal to a wide demographic, and would be a particularly valuable resource for:

    * Those who can't keep up with news and events, due to life being too busy
    * Those who aren't online, or rarely go online
    * Friends and family you are trying to reach, but who never follow your advice to look things up on the internet, or read the (full size) books you recommend
    * Those in Tradition who don't yet understand the big picture of the battle we're in
    * Those open to the problems in the SSPX, but who have thus far only been exposed to the WIDELY AVAILABLE, POPULAR,  extremist and self-serving rhetoric of Fr. Pfeiffer and what amounts to his cult/sect in Boston, KY.
    * Those who were initially favorable to the Resistance, but who were soured on it due to Fr. Pfeiffer's rhetoric and antics.
    * Those who support the Resistance, but who are isolated in a location without weekly Mass from a Resistance priest. Especially those who still attend the SSPX or other less-than-ideal venues! Without a steady diet of THE TRUTH, one risks completely subscribing to the beliefs and position of the other parishioners. Depending on where you attend Mass, that would mean becoming a compromised Indulter, neo-SSPXer, or sedevacantist.

You can subscribe to Oportet Christum Regnare on Hugh Akins' official website here:

Please also keep in mind that Hugh Akins’ ability to continue to generate excellent and invaluable works like Oportet or ѕуηαgσgυє Rising is largely dependent upon your support. If we want to see the triumph of Catholic Tradition, and fill the void left by a collapsing SSPX, then we need to support the initiatives of those few, rare pioneers among us. God gives us a chance: He rises up individuals (albeit very few) who have the time, talent, and inclination to accomplish great deeds for Tradition. But they need our support. If we continue to ignore their knocking on our doors, we can't blame anyone but ourselves when even the knocking disappears and we are left with nothing.

  • Thanks Matthew for reminding me of this publication... totally forgot about it. Just subscribed and can't wait to see it.

My late father insisted that one had an obligation to support good Catholic publications, he believed that it fell under the precept in regards to supporting the Church. I think I must agree, especially in these times.

  • I just got word from Hugh Akins who is very appreciative of Matthew's great support.  He said that he has been without power since the storm swept through Orlando.  Now, he is just waiting until power is restored at the Post Office so he can resume shipping orders.

    Pretty wide target audience.

I recently spoke to a seminarian from the Virginia SSPX seminary, and from what he told me, I highly suspect they're recommending to their students that they STEER CLEAR of this publication!

Just recieved and browsed my first issue... it's very broad indeed, but I must say that even for the  guru of current events, it's not lacking of desirability.
